How do you keep the kids from falling out of bed?

My son is 3 and still sleeps in a toddler bed with a rail at home. I fear that when we go to DW (we are staying at the Polynesian) he will fall right out and hit his head on the floor. Any suggestions (other than sleeping on the floor)?

You can get a bedrail for the bed at the resort, just have to ask! You can have it noted on your reservation or ask at check-in.

Yes, we pushed one of the beds against the wall and asked for a bed rail for the other side.
Worked perfectly!

i got bed rails last time and they were great!! they were in the room when we arrived. The mousekeepers just sort of draped the blankets over them. they were removing them everyday to make the bed properly but I told them not to bother

Are the rails free of charge? DId it make it difficult to get up and go the bathroom (sometimes urgently)? Thanks for the info!

Are the bed rails on the toddler bed detachable? Maybe take them off and see how he does. Most toddlers don't need a bed rail unless there is a risk if they did fall (like off the top of a bunk bed). My DS has slept in a normal bed since he was a baby, never fell off once, ever. Ironically he took a fall off the bed at WDW, because me and my boyfriend were in a full sized bed, and he tried to climb in with us. At home we have a king sized bed, so he'd used to being able to climb in and sleep with us if he wakes up in the middle of the night (which is very rare anymore - he's 5 now).
WDW does have bed rails that can be attached if you really need one though.

The bedrails are detachable and do not go the entire length of the bed so you can leave the bottom portion of the side open to get up for bathroom, etc. We didn't get the bedrails because my daughter never falls out of bed but she did at the Poly at 3 yrs old and those beds are high so we had housekeeping bring up the rails the next day and we have used them on 2 trips since and there are now 2 girls...3 and 5 who share the bed together. They are FREE and help give you piece of mind. It is by far the best solution for your situation.

request bed rails ahead of time. If they are not there when you get to your room call housekeeping. they will bring them to you. We didn't request them our 1st trip at first. The beds at OKW are soo high off the ground. DS 4 (at the time) fell off the bed. Since them we always request them. There will be plenty of room at the bottom of the bed to scoot out for a bathroom trip.
DS does fine at home w/o the rails but he always ask for them when we go to WDW. This year we are at Kinadi- they will be sleeping on the sofa- so no bed rails this time.

How about duct tape? ;)

By the way, sometimes the furniture doesn't move, so you can't push it against the wall. Not sure about the Polynesian.

You can put a bed rail on the side of the sofa that makes into a daybed. The other side is the back of the sofa which sits against the wall. It makes a perfect bed for a younger child. Our granddaughter was 3 when she slept in it and she loved it. No danger at all of falling out because the day bed is actually closer to the floor than the higher beds, and with the bed rail on the outside you won't have to worry about them falling out.

We just got back from the Poly, my son has occasionally fell out of bed. He slept with my older ds (6) so that side of the bed was taken care of. The other side (I used one of the extra big decorative sham/pillows and snuggled it up against the nighttable and the bed...it was perfect and he had NO problems.

When my son was a toddler, we just requested a bedrail at the Disney resorts.......worked like a charm :)

The bed rails are the collapsable type that most people use at home (think Safety First and First Years.) They are about 4 feet long, so you could put it all the way to the top of the bed, and the bottom 1/3 will be left open to climb in and out. My DD still uses them every trip because she sleeps to hard after a long day at the parks, and will fall out easily. All resorts have the rails available.

My son fell out of bed at age 8 staying at the CBR! We put two chairs next to the bed hoping that would keep him in but he managed to kick or move them and fell right off the bed. Those bed rails are for todlers and my older son would have just pushed them right out if he was able to move two chairs in his sleep.

I'm pretty sure you can get rails, but my children learned to sleep in their beds without rails - their bodies adjusted to where the side of the bed is - I think dd fell out 2x and I don't ever remember ds falling out. My dd used a rail for the first month after she moved from a crib to the bottom of bunkbeds - she was 17 months old. By the time she was 3, she was sleeping on the top bunk - that rail was only about 4" above the mattress and did not cover the entire bed - she did fall 1x - but that was while she was playing, not sleeping. Now my ds fell off of the bed at ASMo when he was 6 months old, but that's another story all together.

Oh i didnt even think to ask for a bed rail. We were there in May at CBR and my 3 year old fell right out of bed one night. I was startled awake one night when i heard a thump on the floor and looked over and saw my son lying on the floor still sleeping :scared1:. Well when we go back in september i know what to ask for now. :thumbsup2

My 7 year old little princess princess: still falls out of bed on occasion if the guard rails are not up, so she still sleeps with them at home. We will be asking for them when we go to Disney in August. :tink:

When I was at the AKL a few years ago, i asked twice for bedrails but they never came. Sure enough, my poor little princess fell out of bed. Thanks, AKL.

I haven't read this option yet so I thought I would share (I know people will probably just get bed rails) You can rent a toddler bed from A baby's best friend. Comes with sheets, blanket, etc I will be renting one for my 3 year old in Jan and also renting a bed rail for my little guy who will be sharing a king size bed with me. Just another idea.

The age under consideration doesn't require this comment, and I'm sure it doesn't apply to the poster who stated the above comment either... but, given what I do for a living, I would be remiss not to add a blanket comment/warning here:

Pushing a bed against a wall can be fine for a toddler or older child, but please never, ever do this with an infant as it is very unsafe. We review numerous infant fatalities every year where an infant was sleeping on an adult mattress (whether in a frame or on the floor) pushed against a wall to keep them in place, which led to a "wedging" entrapment that compromised the infant's breathing and led to death. Again, I am talking about infants (<1yo) here. (FWIW, wedging asphyxia can and does also occur between the mattress and the headboard.)

Sorry for the depressing tanget, y'all... :guilty:
