How do you handle insurance when you book a cruise on points?

We booked two cabins on an Alaskan cruise this June. (and sidebar--we didn't book it long ago, were able to get side by side cabins, and pay completely in points, so I guess there is availability this summer) MS said we can't buy the usualy DCL insurance because we're using points and we should buy the normal per point insurance that they sell for regular disney trips. But this wouldn't cover all of the other things that cruise insurance covers like medical emergencies and such.

Has anyone purchased insurance on their own? How do you price it out if you've used points?

Take a look at insuremytrip.com, there are medical only policies that you can purchase there.

I did this for a recent cruise. Only paid a few hundred $ for the cruise, but wanted medical insurance.

You'll have to buy separate policies. We do this all the time. If we use a large number of points, we buy the insurance that DVC offers. It is the only company I have found that would do it. And believe me, I have called many of them. I had thought about just insuring the trip on line for what the points cost or the market value, but every company that I spoke with said that they would not honor the insurance, if we paid in points. Then we purchase medical and maybe flight insurance through another company. The website that mcorbo gave you will let you compare rates.

We just bought insurance from Medex travel just two days from travel. It cost $60 bucks for medical coverage and evacuation coverage for my family of four. IF you are worried only about medical and can handle losing the points, should you not be able to go on the cruise, I would just insure for the medical stuff and airlines.

Medex is what we purchased for our cruise this past September. The medical and evac were reasonably priced and was exactly what we were looking for.

Thanks for all of the info. This is exactly what I'm looking for. We have a son with medical issues. We've never had a severe emergency on a trip, but he has been to celebration hospital a couple of times on WDW trips. Most things could be handled by us and the ship's doctor, but I really want coverage in case he has to be flown to the lower 48.

I always figure if I pay for the insurance I won't need it :)

I haven't decided if I want to insure the points. We've never insured the points before. When we've cancelled last minute in the past we've always been able to use the points somehow in WDW, but this is a LOT of points at once. We'd have to move in to the Poly concierge for a while to burn all of the points. Actually, that doesn't sound so bad . . .

Be careful, a lot of policies do not cover existing conditions. Be sure that yours does. Check it out right away. A number of companies only insure existing conditions if you purchase the insurance within so many days of making the reservation or so far out from the cruise. So don't wait.
