Well we have had a recent round of Upper respitory Bronchittitis run through my house...3 of them had it...Miracle cleared up on her own, Draco went to the vet...and almost had to bring Wario, but the vet gave me pills enough for both Draco and Wario. Luckily Austin and Zelda never got it.

So for 10 days, 2 times a day, I have to give a pill. I had tried cheese, but Wario, Mr Finicky, would not go for it. Draco got smart to it too. Then I tried peanut butter. Well that did the trick. It forces them to swallow it. I now don't have to stick my finger down there thoat, and they get a little treat. I think they will miss there pills. Of course they take there vitamins with no issues

So what do you use?

Fortunately cheese always worked for me! I would use American sliced cheese and break off a small piece and toss it into his/her mouth, and then when she was expecting a yummy piece of cheese, I'd wrap the cheese around the pill and toss it. Worked like a charm. :goodvibes

I remember doing the same thing with bread once too.

Dash is currently taking prednisone and he loves taking his pill. I give it to him first thing in the morning, and he stands next to me as I get it ready jumping the whole time trying to get to it sooner :rotfl: I use about a 1/4 of a piece of sliced cheese and break it into 3 or 4 smaller pieces. I put the pill in one and then have him do a trick to get his treats, he never knows which one the pill is in. He loves cheese and the vet said it was OK for him to have to take his pill with. He's going to be very disappointed when they run out :teeth:

:offtopic: Totally OT - BUT.....

Anyone remember that Seinfeld episode, where Jerry was attempting to give Kramer his medicine - and he was having dog-symptoms??? LOL! :lmao:

My Mickey is the best at taking pills. I just sit him on the counter, open his little mouth and shove the pill in there. Then I rub his throat very gently and all gone. He's the best.

My dog Mike had to take 3-4 pills a day. The only way he would take them was to hide them in a small chunk of peanutbutter fudge! The lady at the candy counter got a kick out of the fact that I would buy $8.00 per pound fudge just to give it to the dog.

My dad's a vet and taught us to administer a pill by opening her mouth and putting the on the back part of her tongue and use your index finger to gently push further back then close her mouth and keep it closed for a second and blow on her snout-makes her swallow!

hope that helps

I have a pug as well and we also use the peanut butter method. Works like a charm. She LOVES it!!

I'll second the blow on the snout (after the pill is in and hold the mouth closed) - supposedly it's instinctive and they will swallow automatically. Works like a charm.

:lmao: :lmao: I would love to try that...but unfortunatly...no snouts.... :lmao: :rotfl2:

Well this is kind of, not nice, but I usually open his mouth and stick the pill as far down the back of his throat that I can and then rub his neck to make him swallow.

Cheese works here. Or pepperoni! The dog is so thrilled to get a bite of pepperoni that she just gulps it right down. :thumbsup2

Peanut butter doesn't work for us. She'll eat all of the PB and spit out the pill.

As our two dogs got older it seemed we were always giving some kind of pill. We found they liked ice cream - the pill would slide right down, LOL. paw:

Petey will do anything for cheese. I only tussled with him once and that time I had to trap him under one arm, force his mouth open and drop the pill in it. Then I used the blowing trick to get him to swallow it. That pill had been in and out of his mouth 4 freaking times before he finally gave in  Since he's gotten older and learned he's most definitley NOT the Alpha around here he takes his pills like a good boy. :thumbsup2

#1 Dog - will do anything to please us. He knows he is supposed to swallow the pill and will do so. He sure *likes* having it wrapped in a treat, but would take the pills without.

#2 Dog is a sneak. No matter how buried the pill is down in the cheese/snack/whatever, he is somehow able to separate the pill from the snack, swallow the snack, hide pill under tongue and quietly spit pill out when nobody is looking. The *only* think that works is shoving pill into dog's throat and gently massaging throat until the dogs swallows.

With my dog, all we used to do was take a piece of bread, and wrap it around the pill so she couldn't see it. Then we would just toss it into the air for her to catch and she would eat it. But now since she's a lot older, and she has to take a lot of pills, she's so used to them that we just mix them in with the rest of her food and she'll eat them no problem.

When my Beags used to take Phenobarbitol twice a day I had perfected getting him to take his pill. We used to "hide" his pill in bread. I'd use the end of the loaf and break off a piece about twice the size of the pill. Then I'd just mold the bread around the pill and, since the piece wasn't big enough to chew, Beags would just swallow it whole! Viola!!! :wizard:

DH never did it that way, though. He'd just life Beags' head up, open his mouth and drop the pill into the back of his throat. Beags would swallow it just like that. Of course, he'd do anything for his Daddy!! :cloud9:

Sally has to take her thyroid pill twice a day...in the morning it's hidden in a piece of cheese, at dinner time I just throw it in the canned food and she gobbles it right up. Of course, they're small pills too.

When it's a capsule, I empty the contents into some wet food and mix well. If it's a tablet, I'll crush it up in a mortar/pestle and mix it in some wet food.

I don't stick anything down my dogs throats anymore...I've found much more sneaky ways to get them to take their pills! ;) :teeth:

I've had dogs that would pick pills out of cheese, peanut butter, bread, donuts, meat...anything. But if it's in a powder form they don't even notice it!

I always put the pills in peanut butter.
