How do you get your UY?

I was wondering about use year. Does it fall on the month that you buy in or is it something you pick?

It is pre-determined by Disney based on what month they are filling.
It is really only important for banking/borrowing.

When we purchased SSR they were pushing an AUG UY. Since we travel in Jan/Feb/Mar we wanted a later use year so we could bank 100% of our leftover points if we had any. (So far we haven't had any!) We were able to get a Dec. UY which I think will work great for us.

We got lucky. We wanted Sept and that's what they offered. We travel in the off season so it was great to hear.
