Is there a shuttle?
Do you have to drive?
And what about back to Orlando for the flight?
Any shuttle return to Orlando from Vero?

Should I even fly back from Orlando? or is there a closer airport to return via Airtran from?

We are planning on a stay at AKV, then off to Vero.
And want to know how to get there?

We were not thinking of renting a car for our whole trip but
if we have to get to Vero, rent for those days...if that's the case...
how would I go about getting a rental car if I'm already at AKV?
Would a rental company drop off a car for us?
Is there a place to rent cars at AKV?
Would desk services help me would getting one?

There is no shuttle to my knowledge. Vero is about a 2 hour drive from Orlando. Someone correct me if I am wrong about the time & distance. I can't answer your questions about a rental car. DH & I always drive our own car to WDW & Vero. You will love Vero, by the way!

We are doing a BWV stay and the heading down to VB in a couple of weeks. We are renting a car from Alamo at the Swan & Dolphin (DVC membership gets you a 10% discount) and then returning it to Orlando International.
The closest airport to VB would be Melbourne and from what I understand Delta is one of the few airlines there (no Southwest or Airtran). Good luck with planning pixiedust:

There isn't a shuttle to/from WDW-Vero Beach or to/from Orlando airport-Vero Beach. I'm not sure but I think you can arrange transportation with Mears but it may be expensive compared to price of renting car at WDW & then returning it at Orlando airport when you leave VB. There are many car rental locations on property at WDW, National/Alamo being 'official' WDW agency
( there's one located at Dolphin at BoardWalk resort area and that is easy to get to by Disney bus from any park or from Downtown Disney ) See this link from mousesavers dot com for more information on car rentals onsite at WDW; it says that National/Alamo will send shuttle to your resort to bring you to location at Car Care Center (located near Magic Kingdom) & it seems that most agencies will arrange to shuttle you over to their location.

And I think closest airport to Vero Beach is Melbourne but if you're flying Airtran then you'd need to use Orlando or West Palm Beach (PB's at least 1 hour&half from Vero )
:)

When we visited Vero we flew into Fort Lauderdale (FLL) airport and picked up our rental car from there. FWIW, we flew out from Orlando (MCO) airport. Ours essentially became an open-JAW booking with one-way rental car.
Code:
Flights: SAN -> FLL -> MCO -> SAN
Car:     FLL -> MCO
If Vero is on either end of your stay -- perhaps you could do similarly?
