How would you get here from the Poly or WL? I also am curious which you like best. Our kids will be 1 and 4, will it keep them entertained?

There may be a better way (possibly a direct launch), but if not I would get over to MK and then grab a launch from there to Fort Wilderness. As for the entertainment factor, I haven't been to the Backyard Barbecue, but I think HDD would be fun.

From WL, you can catch a boat to FW. From Poly, you'd have to take a monorail or boat to MK, and then get the boat to FW.

Or, you could take the monorail from Poly to CR, and get the FW boat there.

If your kids are 1 & 4, Backyard BBQ would be better. There is time with the characters there. HDDR is fun and funny but only if you "get" the jokes. We liked HDDR, or at least I thought we did. This year I asked if anyone wanted to do it again and everyone said no. :confused3 . My DS's are 13 and 7. The boat directly from WL to Fortwilderness is the quickest and easiest way. When the show is over, quickly make it to the dock (it's right there) because everyone will be hurrying to the docks. If you are lucky, you will catch the fireworks while on the water.

There is also a direct bus from WL to FW, that is probably the fastest way to either the bbq or HDDR. The boat is nice and relaxing, but I think the boat only goes in one direction now, so coming or going you would have to go the long way around.
For your young ones the BBQ is a better bet, but keep in mind it is outside, so the weather can be a factor.

My boys were 14 months and not yet 3 when we went to the Hoop Dee Doo... They smiled and clapped almost the entire show... The also ate really well... The food was very good, down-home cooking... We like that there is assigned seating... You don't have to show up super early to wait on a line to get a good seat... We like that you get what you pay for... We arrived about 30 minutes before the doors openned to give our son time to get in a pony ride (steps away from the doors)...We all had a great time that night and we cannot wait to go back.

The BBQ is not on our list because there is no assigned seating, the menu does not offer the best of foods, uncomfortable picninc table seating, buffet style (for that price we like the idea of being served) and we did not like the draw of the dance floor (we don't want the kids up running around)... If you don't get there super early and you don't want to push people over, you may not get a good seat, and then your kids can't see Mickey or the others... Not a fun time for our family or our needs... To each their own.
