We have never used ME. I wouldn't mine trying it once but DH still prefers getting a towncar. He thinks it would take to long to use ME. Just wondering what other people prefer.
I love ME. It is just a full on Disney start to the vacation. And its included in your resort costs (or you can call it free if you like)
Your DH may be right - some of the time. It all depends on whether you time it right and there is no way to plan it. Last year from the ME desk at MCO to resort arrival time was less than 40 minutes. We got on the bus and it left. Sometimes you have to wait a while for the bus to fill.
The only reason I would use a Town Car is if I had an ADR or something I didn't want to rush for or if I wanted the shopping stop on the way, which you dont' get with ME. Otherwise I don't see much benefit of arranging your own transport.
I just cant see, on average, DME being that much if any slower then a car service. Not going to say it doesnt happen of course as I have had a long DME trip, but I've had many more normal DME trips then slow ones.
If you have only carry-on bags, then a town car will be faster. If you check bags, then the time to resort can be very close between the two since the waiting time at baggage claim can very easily eat up whatever time you save by not waiting for a bus and possibly making stops at other resorts before yours.
IMO, if everything works perfectly for your town car trip you would get to your resort maybe 30-35 minutes faster than the high end of the range of normal expectations for a DME trip. Of course things can go horribly wrong at baggage claim (I waited two hours for bags to come off of the carousel in one extreme situation) and you'd have a longer trip using the town car, or things can get out of whack at DME and it could take you longer than normal using that method.
There are other benefits to using a town car, such as the vehicle itself or the ability to do a grocery stop, so all in all it's perfectly reasonable for an individual or family to prefer it over DME. If that's your case and you're willing and able to spend the $$, go for it!
If you have checked luggate, DME is the way to go. Once you drop your luggage at your Departure Airport, no need to touch it till it's in your room. Our trip in Sept '05 Off plane to DME Check in - 5 minutes, Wait for bus to load 10 minutes, 30 minutes to hotel (and the nice welcome video).
I'm going solo on my next trip, so I didn't see the point in a towncar/rental/cab/etc and will just be doing ME. On the trip I'm taking next November with my best friend and her husband, we're going to be renting a car because we plan on doing a lot of resort dining, so it'll just be easier for us to deal with a rental car than the Disney bus service.
We use Tiffany for the grocery stop and for the fact that we go when we're ready to go, not when someone else finally waddles on to a bus, after the bus finally arrives. Also, for someone who grew up in a middle class '50s family, it's still a gas to be met at the airport by a uniformed driver holding a sign with my name on it. Doesn't take much float my boat.
Mrs Grumpy I am married to your DH and PSUGuy, you are his long lost brother.
He was so pitiful the other night. We have decided to fly in from New Orleans the night before our DVC trip and will stay at Pop (love that place). When I mentioned taking the FREE DME from MCO...he said...
"What about my Tiffany Towncar...it is the only thing I ever ask for on our trips...you got DVC (of course we share the DVC)...can't I at least have my town car" Then I saw his bottom lip quiver. Gotta love a man that appreciates the finer things in life and it just really makes it a vacation for him.
We love using a Towncar. Getting off of the plane, being met by our driver at baggage claim, helped with the bags and being taken directly to our resort WITH our luggage. To me, it is the best way to start off a vacation.
