How do you find a *good* financial lawyer?

The lawyer my mom currently has is someone she doesn't like and doesn't feel is competent.

She just found out that the big life insurance isn't going to pay off. That means she may not (in her words, *will* not) be able to afford to live in her house. So she's going to be trying to sell it ASAP. And she wants someone with financial knowledge and experience and as a lawyer who can help her. But we don't know how to find one she'll get along with. If she can even afford one.

So, advice?

How old is your Mother Rajah?

Many Senior Centers/Community Centers keep a list of local attorneys and professionals who will assist recent Widows with their financial affairs.

I'm sorry about the life insurance. I'm sure your Mom's head is really spinning right now. Try to keep her calm and keep her from making snap decisions that she might regret later. She might not be able to afford the house, but that doesn't mean it needs to be sold this right this month.

It needs to be sold ASAP when she can't afford to make the payments on it.

She's in her late 50's.

well I would start with a local Senior Center then.

Also, is she a member of AARP? They offer a legal services network with reduced fees for members.

If she is in her 50's, I would definately recommend AARP. It costs practically nothing and they have numerous benefits and services.

Slow down , one mistake many newly widowed people make is rushing to make a change. If she can't afford the house note, is she positive she can afford to buy some thing smaller or even rent?( and location of what she can afford might be a problem). Before rushing to put the house on the market( and it can sell overnight) I would think all this over.
