How do you evaluate...

...your shots onsite? Lately (well, ever since I hit that magic age of sight reduction), I have real trouble evaluating a shot using the LCD. I mostly rely on the histogram to ensure I get correct exposure but I have trouble seeing how well the shot was composed. All too frequently, I get home and find that those shots I thought were perfect turn out to have too many flaws to fix, such as antlers on the subject, focus locked on the wrong item, motion blur, tilted horizon, etc.

What are you doing to ensure you come home with a good shot?

same problem=multiple shots and hope one is right:)

i figure if the histogram looks ok and i only use the center point so i should be ok with the focus, even if there is something i didn't see, hopefully i can get rid of it pp if it detracts...generally i can see well enough to at least get a basic composition and i try not to be totally dead on and leave alittle bit of extra room in case i do need to crop something. also i've gotten into the habit of taking a few shots from a few slightly changed vantage points if it's something i really want to hopefully not have uncroppable telephone wires or something i didn't see.

Without my closeup glasses (which I don't carry) all the LCD is good for is to see if someone walked in front of the camera while I was taking the photo. I rely on the histogram for exposure, use only the center focus point except on very rare occasions, and try to remember to check the horizon (not always successfully).

I rarely have antlers on the subject (except for moose and deer), I really try to look *beyond* the subject for things like that (again, not always successfully).

I have my camera set to show a histogram in the short after-shot review, and if I'm worried about focus, etc, I'll quickly go into playback mode and zoom far in to see how the detail looks. At 100%, it is difficult to make a good judgment, so zooming into the photo is almost mandatory.

I've tried moving in but have not had much success. My poor old eyes (being far-sighted) just can't quite make out the sharpness. Can't tell if the pic is blurred or if it's my eyes. I guess that's why I went with 2-22" widescreen LCDs for my desktop. Once they photo is up there, I can finally see the darn thing. Gosh, I hope I don't end up having to get a laptop. I hate carrying what I take now (we try to pack only 20lbs of gear, each, on any trip). We want to try to get to 15lbs someday, so this would be counterproductive.

I agree with jann1033. Multiple shots and hope that one is good when I see the larger image on the computer.
