Hello all you disney experts. We have been to Animal Kingdom and Magic Kingdom at park opening but never witnessed rope drop. Do you have to get there before official opening time or how does that work?

thanks.

Danielle

Hello all you disney experts. We have been to Animal Kingdom and Magic Kingdom at park opening but never witnessed rope drop. Do you have to get there before official opening time or how does that work?

I arrive 20-30 before opening time at any park, on any day.

MK's Rope Drop Ceremony called "Magic Kingdom
Welcome
" (see link below) is, by far, the best and
most elaborate.

Guests are usually admitted starting about 15-20 minutes before
the posted opening time, to WAIT just inside the gates, in front of the trains station (near the "flower Mickey face.")

The ceremony lasts 6-7 minutes or so and starts 6-7 minutes before the scheduled opening time.

There is really only one more "formal" Rope Drop Ceremony... at DAK
called "The Adventure Begins"(see link below.)

Guests are usually admitted starting about 15-20 minutes before
the posted opening time, and they re-group to wait at the far end of the bridge from the Oasis (near the "Tree of Life.")

The ceremony lasts 6-7 minutes or so and starts 6-7 minutes before the scheduled opening time.

The above two shows feature Disney characters with "speaking
roles".
MK: (called "Magic Kingdom Welcome") at the train
station (with lots singing and
dancing, and a guest family).
DAK: (called "The Adventure Begins") after your cross
the bridge from the "Oasis" (no singing, but cute).

Epcot allows guests to "re-group" near Innoventions
and, on certain mornings, some of the characters show up
to quietly shake hands with a few of the folks standing at the rope.
CMs "hold" guests until scheduled open time, then
allow folks to go either way towards Soarin' or Test
Track/Mission Space.

At DHS the CMs have ropes across the street near the
Call-board/Tips-board/Starring Rolls eatery.
There will be a short (about 3-4 minutes) "show" which
will include a couple of selected Guests and then the
ropes are dropped
and everyone walks briskly
STRAIGHT AHEAD (with CM escorts)
towards the new Toy Story Midway Mania...
or turns RIGHT, and walks
briskly (with CM escorts) to ToT and/or RnRC.

At MK, if you have attended Cindy's Royal Breakfast
early, they do have a rope to hold you from FL until
"opening time".

If (IF) they perform a Rope Drop Ceremony at a given park, it will ONLY be ONCE per day (not twice.)

They might not perform it at all.

If (IF) they do perform a Rope Drop Ceremony at a given park on an AM EMH day, it will ONLY be performed for the EMH opening crowd and not at the "regular" opening time that day.

If (IF) they do perform a Rope Drop Ceremony at a given park, it will begin about 5-8 minutes before the scheduled opening time.

But, guests will be let into the park about 10-20 minutes before the scheduled opening time to get ready for the Rope Drop Ceremony.

To see if they will be performing the ceremony, look at the Steve Soares site.
(see link below)

Note: Like everything else at WDW, not EVERYTHING will
happen the same way or the same time (or even happen
at all) every day.
The best you can hope for is for what USUALLY happens.

Rope Drops are no exception to this.

I never miss being there before opening, EMH or
regular, but not just because of the "Rope Drop
Ceremonies"... its because you can do SO MUCH MORE
before the throngs of folks (who simply will NOT get
up early on vacation, bless their sleepy little
hearts) arrive later in the mornings.

Never done that, probably never will - spend too much time up late causing trouble! :lmao:

somewhat off topic but.. WOW seeing AK from this angle really shows how HUGE the place is.....

As for Rope Drops.. they bring happy tears to my eyes.. RD's are the best part of WDW for me.

wow! thanks so much for the maps Robo they are amazing. I think I will print them out and bring them with me- they will even help someone with no sense of direction like myself

thanks again you are great :goodvibes

I haven't seen a Robo map in a while. They're my favourite thing on the boards!:woohoo:

Wow!

Such nice compliments!

:flower3:

I've been to WDW over 12 times and never made a RD. We are going in October, maybe I'll make one? :scratchin

How do I do rope drop? I avoid it like the plague!

It makes me anxious and I end up hating all the people around me. We don't generally rely on getting to parks early to do the popular rides.

It has been soooo long since we've done rope drop at MK. I know we have to do it again very soon. When DH and I are there by ourselves we'll get to do it. That will won't be till a couple days in July 2009.

This is such excellent information and Robo's maps spell everything out so well that I just had to give it a bump.

Robo - you should have all of your maps on a dedicated site or sticky. They ALWAYS answer my question very clearly.

Thanks for all you do Robo!

We've been to Disney about 8 times and have done rope drops after the first 2 times. If I weren't at rope drop my day wouldn't be complete. The excitement and thrill of being in the park first is amazing.

May I add that we go during Christmas week so being at rope drop we know we will get on the rides we want before it gets too crowded. It takes a little effort and a whole lot of energy but it sure is fun.

Last month during rope drop my daughter got picked twice to open AK. Family next to us in Epcot got picked as "family of the day". Honestly, it was just as exciting seeing another family and their happiness too.

We usually are there for rope drop, no matter what time of year...have had fabulously good time getting on all the headliners early & often. We can get as many as 12 attractions done before lunch at MK by showing up for rope drop (either on an early EMH day or a non-EMH day.) We're generally leaving around lunch time.

Great info! I can attest to the value of being there for RD during really crowded times. We went to our first RD two years ago for Thanksgiving week and wow what a difference it made in our day of being able to see and do everything. Plus the shows really are cute and get us all excited for the day!

Is there much in the way of trampling and jostling going in the rope drop these days? About 9 years ago we did rope drop at AK and my ds almost got trampled.
