How do you deal?

Yrs ago my job was given away when I went on maternity leave. When I called in to get my start date I was always pushed off. Finally the girl who was given my hours had to tell me the Dr. so&so gave her my hours. Nice huh?! I cried & cried. Thought it was the end of the world. Now it turns out I work for the BEST Dental office ever and look back at the other office and realize how bad it was there.....MY POINT IS.... It may seem like the end of the world right now, but things happen for a reason and it WILL get better. You must tell yourself that. Good luck with all....:goodvibes

I really need to pull myself together. I'm not handling it as well as I should be. I have so much stress right now, this on top of it all is overwhelming. I really wish dh were here.

Sweetheart, you're allowed to react.

Anyone would. Allow yourself to deal.

Just do your job and never do the side stuff, company's are as cold hearted as they come

I'm so sorry. FWIW, a very qualified teacher's assistant was let go at the end of the school year last year. I swear, our Board of supervisors just tries to game the system by letting teachers/assistants/staff go. Then all us taxpayers get in an uproar. What is missed, is that they're messing with people's livelyhood's. But then they have egg on their face in August, because they have to rehire.

Anyway, the assistant I referenced above was rehired come August, and she's done a great job!!

Just trying to let you know a lot of times it's just stupid financing. Very qualified staff is let go and it's nothing personal.

On the flip side, our younger dd is in special ed preschool, and I will be fighting a battle to get her into ESY, summer school. Again, I"m certain that is budget related, more than anything. So the fight continues.

I'm very sorry for your situation. I hope you can reunite with your dh regardless.

Magic Mom -
I, too, was recently blindsided when I lost my job of 11 years. I know every situation is different but I can honestly say that in the long run it has been very good for me. I had just been back to work a month give or take after maternity leave so I'm currently at home with my 6 month old baby. I will say that there is most definitely a grieving process. You will get through this and I am a firm believer that when one door shuts another opens - I just wish that it wasn't so hard to find that other open door. I am still looking for another position but I have a lot of clarity in what I want from a new job and that has come about because of all the things about my prior job that I don't want again. Good luck!

I was also blindsided from a teaching position I worked 5 years at (at a charter school with no union so no rules about advanced notice) when they sent me a letter IN AUGUST telling me that I would not be starting the new school year.

I also cried about it and for a year it was hard since it was so late I only found a part time position for that school year. However, for the next year I found a MUCH nicer school closer to me and am very grateful I do not work there anymore. This school is open and honest to its employees which is really a new concept to me!

Keep in mind as long as you did your job your colleagues will be great references for you so keep in touch with them! I am sure they will be sympathetic!

It's a very stressful situation to be in, like others have said do not beat yourself up over it!

It seems to be going around a lot lately. I work registry (kind of like a contractor) at two hospitals and one of which you could always work as many hours as you wanted in my department for YEARS. Now we are not guaranteed hours but they gave people little notice that they were *drastically* cutting hours. So at the end of April I found out for the month of May they scheduled me 4 hours total :rotfl:

I am fortunate to still have my back up gig but others weren't so lucky. Another friend of mine got terminated from her job of seven years, she never saw it coming but they had to let 4 people go, then she got dumped by her boyfriend the next day!

I know just how you feel. Despite getting 100% evaluations 4 years in a row, my contract was not renewed for this year. It gets better, but it feels pretty crappy right now, I know.

Can you get unemployment? That helps.

Good luck and try not to overthink things - it may have had nothing to do with you.

Just an assistant. And I realize it's foolish to be upset over an assistant teaching position, but it was a great job for me right now while dh is overseas, plus I loved the kids and loved teaching.

Ah, then I absolutely know exactly how you feel. I still miss the kids. Luckily, I'm still friends with some of the teachers and they will let me know how they're doing.

Who knows why they don't renew some and renew others. I can't figure it out. You wouldn't believe some of the assistants they kept when I got pink slipped. Some can't even speak or write properly. I don't get it.

I put my whole self into that job, did research on reading and writing programs on my own, planned well for my groups, etc. It wasn't meant to be, I guess.

Did they say you were eligible for rehire?

I am so sorry that this happened to you. Our school system made some changes last year and I have a pretty good friend who lost her job. She was a teacher and now she works for her husband and is very happy.

I am a firm believer that everything happens for a reason, so try not to get so down on yourself.

I'm sorry this happened to you. Maybe you can ask your principal for more details about what you can do in your next position to make yourself more valuable? I don't mean to imply you 'deserved' this or anything, but that might give you some clues at least why this happened. Somethings are just crap, and they don't make much sense, and they suck, but they really aren't about you and the job you're doing and who you are, know what I mean?

Are they really hiring or are they 'replacing'? Most districts "non-renew" contracts for non-tenured teachers every year. I know in our state they have to do this by a certain date so they just pink slip everyone. They know it's coming so it isn't a shock. Most get rehired.

Ah teaching. That is one field where anybody can get laid off right now and been doing a great job.

Thanks, I'll try keep telling my self that. ;) But really, I'm not at the top of the pay scale...l think I just didn't click with the principal. I'm not sure why, I've worked there for three years, but for the last few months I got a weird feeling from her. But the kicker is that she knew I had another job I worked part time that wanted me full time . I couldn't work both full time so I gave up the other job last week for this one. She knew that was happeneing and never said a word. She let me quit that job knowing she was going to let me go.

That would bother me too. I understand that there are guidelines for these things but having worked in admin I believe that she could have gotten permission to tell you what was going on and not have let you quit the other job. Is there any chance you can talk to the other place now?

You're right. Education is pretty tough right now. DH is currently interviewing teachers for vacancies and has a huge number of applications. He's having a hard time because he has great applicants but only a few teaching positions open.
