I finally took down my christmas tree and brought my silk ficus tree out of storage. However it is now extreamly dusty. Is there a good way for me to clean it without wiping down each individual leaf.

How do you clean your silk plants?

I've heard that you can put them in the shower.

Do you have a detachable shower head? If so, you can stand the plant in the shower and just spray the leaves. Then let it dry out for awhile.

Blow dryer setting on cool can work, too.

herc.

OMG............I'm spitting coffee on my screen now.............I read the title to this thread and thought "Who in the world wears silk pants? How impractical!!" Then I reread the title .... nevermind :rotfl: :rotfl:

I always take them out on the back deck and spay them with the garden hose then I let them drip dry.

I've never done it in the winter though. :teeth:

Without some kind of cleaner, water may not be enough. A film of grime and dust can remain.

I take my ficus tree out on deck, spray it liberally with a safe cleaner. (Last time I used ammonia-free Glass Plus, mixed half&half with water) and then spray with the hose or a spray bottle of clean warm water.

It came out spotless. Beautiful and green. No dust film at all.

Just drip dry, shake off the excess water. voil'a.

Smaller plants can be done in the sink, tub, or shower.

If it's greens only (without any raffia or florist's foam), you can it into a large garbage bag with about 1/2 cannister or iodized salt. Hold it closed tightly and shake, shake, shake -- and watch the dust disappear. I was very skeptical of this until I tried it and IT WORKED!

I actually cough up the money for "silk plant cleaner" (not much around $4 tops)...take my ficus tree out on the deck (so I need a nice day) and spray like there is no tomorrow.

a white "film" will develop on the leaves...but when it dries, it disolves off the dust.

I take mine outside and hose them down. I leave them sitting in a sunny area and I'm always amazed at how fast they dry!

Of course, before I do this, I remove them from the pots. :teeth:

I had the same reaction! :rotfl2:

For smaller plants: I dip them in warm, soapy (dishwashing detergent) water. Rinse and allw to air dry in the dish rack.

I would think something like a ficus tree could be cleaned in the shower or outisde with a garden hose.

that's exactly what i thought it said too! i looked at my boyfriend and said, "who wears silk pants? that's awful!" then i reread it. ha. :lmao:

I get this stuff at Walmart called Silk Plant Cleaner or something. It comes in aerosol or pump, I prefer the latter. You just spray it on them (outside) until they are dripping, that is it!! They just come clean. Some that are extra dirty require more than one spraying. There's no wiping or mess. It's super easy. I love it!!

I've tried the special silk plant sprays and putting my ficus in the shower. However, whenever the water or special spray dries, you still have residue on the leaves.

The best way to clean a silk plant is to spray a little dust spray on a cloth and wipe each leaf down. If really does shine afterwards! :) I do this while watching TV. It makes the time go fast!

My aunt takes them out back in the Spring and Fall and mists them with the garden hose.

I'm so bad with plants, a silk one would die.

This is what I do too. If it's a small plant though, I'll use the sprayer at the kitchen sink.

I used to work in a restaurant and this restaurant had standards that were way above the health inspector's and this is exactly how we cleaned them there too. Once a week back at the dish washer spray thingy. Of course it was commercial grade (and it was hot water), the concept is still the same. Back there everything was wet though so you could spray em till your heart was content. LOL

If it's good enough for that restaurant (and every single wall that wasn't stone was scrubbed daily), then it's good enough for my house too.
