I have a black gas stovetop (i.e. not glass), and I've gone from hades and back trying to get that sucker clean -- mainly the burner pans and grates. Tried ammonia, vinegar, magic eraser, anything from borderline corrosive to all natural, soaking all night, yadda yadda. I also found that Barkeepers Friend (the liquid version) finally made a dent. I am a little cautious about what it will do to the finish over metal, so I make sure to use a damp sponge to rub it in.
Do you make sure you have some water on your rag or scrubber? I keep my black scrub square (from Phaltzcraft) wet when scrubbing and then I use a circular motion. Never had a problem with it scratching. It actually removed every single mark that was there.
I then use a wet paper towel to remove product and a microfiber towel to dry. Shines up so nicely and looks brand new. I use to buy the white liquid from Sears but hated it. I will never switch now. The Bar Keepers Friends was really cheap too. I think around $2.50 for a big container.
I am looking to buy a new gas stove and the grates are my concern. They start off looking nice & shiny black but everyone complains that after cooking on them they look old. Any way to avoid that other than not cooking?
