How Do You Buy Add On Points? How Does that work? Do you buy them resale of right through Disney? Is there a minimum? Why do you need add on points?

Buy either Resale or direct from DVC.
We've added on 3 times. Obviously more Points means more often or Bigger Accommodation.

Phil :)

Phil, you seem knowledgeable and I'm BRAND new to all of this. when I bought mine (just this Wed), my Guide, Nick, was very emphatic about buying on the after market that if I did, to make SURE that I bought points with the same UY. Apparently that's a big deal with Disney.

Is it harder to use points on different accounts for a single stay? I'm assuming differing UY's would mean different accounts. I CAN see where this could get VERY messy and confusing to ME.

Comments?

I'm sure someone will soon tell me if I'm wrong but I think that all your points wherever must have the same use year. We own at 4 resorts so with a bit of banking and borrowing we can get a couple of resorts at the 11 month window. It does take a bit of managing but some other posters on here have downloadable trackers and things. My goal is to have enough for 6 weeks in a studio when I retire.

As far as why people buy add ons, they do so for a variety of different reasons. Some people want a certain number of points but can't afford them outright - they buy what they can afford and add on more later. Some people start with one resort and find they also want points at another, in order to have the 11 month advantage at both resorts. Sometimes people who bought at one resort end up falling in love with a brand new resort that wasn't even planned at the time of their original purchase.

If you buy directly from Disney, you must buy in increments of 25 points. If you buy 25 points you must pay cash - if you buy 50 or more you can finance through Disney. If you buy a resale, obviously you will buy a contract with a specific number of points already assigned to it.

Wilson, I don't know why your guide told you that, unless it's simply the party line they've been told to say. It's absolutely possible to have more than one Use Year - many people on these boards have two or more. Yes, it's a little bit of a housekeeping chore to manage the different years, but it's certainly not that terribly difficult. Some people like different resorts for different reasons, and buying a resale contract more cheaply at a sold out resort is enough of an incentive for them to be willing to manage multiple Use Years. Use Year isn't that big a deal, anyway, unless you are in the habit of cancelling trips fairly often at the last minute.

We have two use years. We bought at SSR through Disney with an Aug UY, then bought a BWV resale with an Apr UY because it was a great deal. We added on at BWV through Disney in the same UY but got an Aug UY when we added on at AKV. I can manage the two UYs but I don't think I'd want another. I got DVC to relax!:lmao:

I thought those Disney (25 and 50) were minimums. Most new member deals start at 160, but above those minimums you can get any number?

Did you buy through Disney or Resale? Does Disney offer add on points to all resorts?

We are talking about add on contracts. I was assuming that the OP already had an original contract. Yes, if you are a first time buyer of DVC directly from Disney, your first contract must be at least 160 points. If you are buying resale, you don't have that restriction - you can buy a contract with any number of points.

Once you are "in the system" as an owner, whether from Disney or resale, you can add on in increments of 25/50 as explained above if you are getting the points from Disney.

Disney does have add on points at all the resorts -even the "sold out" ones. They get points back from resale contracts that don't pass the Right of First Refusal. BUT - and this is a big but - they don't always have the number of points in the Use Year you want - and I do think if you are adding on they make you get the same use year. So you might have to go on a waiting list for your, say 75 BCV points with a March Use Year. Some people get them pretty quickly and some have to wait a long time.

Also, be aware that it's the saleman's job to sell you the new resort - you must be very firm that a sold out resort is the only one you will consider.

Will I pay full price for add on points through Disney or are they discounted? If I buy from Disney do I pay closing costs?

We are in the process of buying resale. Here is what I have learned in the past weeks. You can learn a lot reading the threads and stickies on the DVC part of this board. Make sure you have a good handle on how it works before you buy to avoid frustration and headaches.

Disney does charge closing on the first contract. Once a member, I don't think they charge closing. 160 is the minimum when buying thru Disney and you can purchase any amount over that as long as the points are available. (in the case of a sold out resort)

If you have different UY's, you will have 2 different member numbers and 2 different master contracts. If you have the same UY with all your points, you have 1 member number.

If you own at 2 resorts, you cannot use, for example, your BWV points at the 11 month window to reserve at your other home resort. You only get the 11 month advantage at your home resort with that resorts points. A lot of people buy at two resorts and bank or borrow every other year to have a week at each resort alternating years rather than try to combine the points. So, say you own 50 at BWV and 50 at VWL. You borrow next years 50 BWV points to have a total of 100 points and use your 11 month window to stay at BWV in '08. In '09, you use your banked VWL points from '08 to vacation there using the 11 month window. Does that make sense? I may not have explained that well.

I understand.

I see that you stayed at Hilton Head. Did you like it? What did you like about it?

We are waiting to get our points through rofr and should be ready to go in early June. We want to do a summer vacation at HH but I hear its hard to get reservations in the summer.

They are a great bunch of people who share their experiences - and more- about going thru this process. It helps make the wait tolerable.

We haven't actually stayed at the HHIR. We first toured DVC 8 years ago and they were selling HHI. We bought Marriott Grande Vista instead. On our first trade, we went to HHI. Fell in love and bought Marriott there. Last year on a cruise, we attended the sales meeting and spoke with the guide about HHI again. DH and I were on HHI in Feb and decided to walk around the HHI resort one more time. Then we bought. Third time is a charm. I can tell you about HHI but not too much resort specific. It is difficult to get into but I don't get the impression that it is impossible. HHI is fantastic. It is relaxing and beautiful. It isn't touristy, very laid back, with a lot to do if you chose to. The town of HH has been very strict with building codes and preserving greenspace. They recently bought all of the used car lots and turned the porperty into green space. As a resident, you have to go off island to buy a car. There is no neon an even the building colors are strictly governed and limited to a specific color pallette. Buildings can be no more than 4-5 stories and signage is limited in height as well.

Now for HHIR. It is located on Broad Creek with a clubhouse that is a short distance away and ocean front. They run a shuttle or you can ride our bike. There are miles and miles of bike trails on the island and bike rental is reasonable by the week or day. The views from the boardwalk on Broad Creek were lovely. The property is very shaded by Live Oaks with spanish moss and has paths that meander between the buildings. On the other side, is the marina. You must cross a small bridge to get to the resort. Along the other side of the marina are some shops and restaurants that are really nice.
The main building has a very nice huge room with a fireplace, tv and pool table in it. The decor is very woodsy and outdoorsy. It reminded me of being at a camp in the woods someplace. It felt totally secluded and peaceful. I have heard that the kids activities are fantastic although our kids are older.

If you can think of anything else, let me know. Hope this helps.
