How Do You Build Your Child's Immunity

OP if you have a whole foods near you we get a vitamin from there that's an immunity booster for kids. They're called Sea Buddies and we find ours in both the kids aisle as well as the vitamin section....

Also, and I know this will gross a lot of people out, we all drink raw milk. Last winter season we all did not have 1 cold or flu with the 4 of us, and I have a 2 year old and a 7 year old. I attribute this to the many good health factors regarding raw milk.....It's not for everyone, and a GOOD clean farm needs to be used for it.

Vaccinations :cool2: and trying to encourage healthy eating. I had mono in high school and it knocked me out for about a month and then I had to be careful for another five months. I do wonder about people who get knocked out for "years" since it falls at an age where kids will use it as an excuse. :rolleyes1

Yes, but the OP's daughter doesn't want to give up anything, so I doubt she is using it as an excuse. Funny, even though I didn't really like school, I would have given my right arm to feel normal. OH and my friend that died, well she went back to Auburn to study for her finals, she was on the deans list.

I don't think all kids would use it as an excuse, anyone that has had to deal with the tiredness and the constant not feeling well, would gladly take on anything if it meant not having to feel this way. I am glad you didn't have this experience. Oh and for what it is worth, I lost 20 pounds in 6 weeks, I weighed 90 pounds and I am 5'3". Mine turned into encephalitic menengitis I was semi comatose for about 2 days and my Dr died of some rare form of meningitis 5 days after he discharged me from the hospital and he was perfectly healthy when I went in. So your implications that some are using it as an excuse, just cuts a little to close to home.

Sorry I got onto my mono soap box and I didn't want to.

Its okay. I'm not denying how serious it can be as it wiped me out too. However, as both a student and a teacher I'd see people take advantage of it. The best are the ones that went home after lunch months after they had it because they were too tired to go their last two classes of the day, but made it back for drama production rehearsals and track practice.

Sorry so many people you know had severe problems with it and that I got skeptical…I've had reasons to also.

No problem, I really do get worked up over this stupid illness, it really messed up a lot for me. It worked out fine, but I would have killed to be normal. One trip across the hall to wash my face required a 2 hour nap after, now that was right in the middle of my run with mono. I guess I do see where kids could use this, especially if they didn't have a bad case of it. And you are right, if they can make it to drama and track then they can certainly sit in class. That is crazy.

It actually got me thinking because just about everyone I know had mono in high school and I look at it as a sort of "right of passage" Chicken pox thing. I was actually thinking should my kids get it out of the way before they head off to college. Your posts were a good reminder that not everyone gets it and gets over it quickly.

My mom tried the right of passage thing with the chicken pox. She just sent me off to play with a friend that had them, I NEVER got the darn things. I had to get vaccinated before my DS could, they did a blood test and I had no immunity. Do you know how hard it is to find the vaccine for chicken pox for adults? :lmao:

It is a crazy thing, my pediatrician had been in practice for about 25 years. I picked up the phone when he called with the lab results, he told my mom and I quote, "In all my 25 years of practice, I have never seen a case of mono like this." I really think that DH was a carrier, if you can have that, I got sick right after I started dating him, and he never quit kissing me and he never got it. I think I realized that after all of that illness and he still stuck around, that he was a keeper.

I had mono twice as a teenager. The first time it was the normal 6 weeks but the second time it lasted about a year. It changed me, I got sick a lot more frequently. This is really weird but every time I'm about to get sick, my tongue swells! It never happened before that.

I found that 2000iu of vitamin D helps me.

OMG me too.

I had mono last winter and I am still wiped out from it. I did not rest as much as I probably should have and I think that has as lot to do with it. I notice I get tired much more easily now and have caught just about every bug that is going around. I'm not sure how much it is helping, but I have been taking Vitamin D and B-12 supplements on the recommendation of my doctor. I also try to get as many fresh fruits and vegetables as a I can and get as much rest as I can. Best of luck to your daughter, I hope she is feeling better soon!
