How do we object to a ad in the postings here?

This doesn’t belong here. We are mostly adults but still. My phone won’t let me get rid of this one.
PS. Could a mod delete this post after the right person sees it?

They're really cute, though.
I love having an ad blocker with my browser. Only downside are the websites that whine to you about turning it off.

Ads like that are generated by the web hosting company via an algorithm of history or other browsing habits, even if its tangentially related. The website has no say what ads are placed in ad spaces on web pages, phones are especially susceptible to getting bombarded by pop up and placed ads. And actually what see on your phone isn't what others see on theirs so the ad you saw probably didn't appear on other people's browser.

Disboards has installed Google Adsense which simply means they rent space on Disboards to an advertising agency. Companies buy ads at this advertising agency, called Google Display Network and the ads get placed on various websites.

Who sees the ads depends on various things including
Location
Amount spent
the persons browsing history

Location based ads are ads which you will see on Disboards for companies in your town, city or country, even if you have never visited their websites

Amount spent. The cheapest ads are ads which do not target anyone. Sometimes on Disboards I will see ads for American companies, cheap ads for cheap services or products which the company just wants huge numbers of people to see and they don't care where people are or who they are.

Your browsing history matters too. Sometimes websites have set up ads which get triggered after you leave their website. For example, you might be checking out a hotel in Vegas for a trip in 2021 and then log into Disboards and immediately see an ad for that hotel. Thats called a remarketing ad campaign.

Every time an ad is clicked Disboards makes money. It helps with the running costs of the website. Disboards have a very limited control over the type of ads shown. When AD SENSE is being installed you can choose which ad categories to include or block, so as Disboards is a family friendly website they have probably blocked the more adult categories and the politics category.

The ad you saw, while you might not think it should be on Disboards, it would be in the ladies clothing / retail category, sure its showing a bit more skin, but its advertising the clothing. Technically its not breaking any rules, its just that you don't think the photo is appropriate.

And just to show the varying levels of what is considered acceptable, I could not see what was the issue with the 'ad' in the first post and thought that I missed the advertisement entirely. (It's far less than what one would see on any beach or public pool etc so not sure of the issue)

I prefer not to have individuals to have the right to censor the content I see, but to leave that for me to decide what is 'appropriate' or not.

One time I got a ad for drugs. Never looked for drugs online or did any. It was to buy marijuana

Just get an ad blocker. I understand the DIS gets revenue from those ads, but I am honestly sick and tired of web sites absolving themselves of responsibility when third-party ad partners like AdSense, or advertisers therein, misbehave.

It’s your site; take responsibility for the parties that you allow to advertise on it.

Ads that are barely targeted (my geographic location; all males age 35-45) are annoying, but OK, fine, I get it. Ads that clearly have nothing to do with my browsing history are worse. But pop-up ads that hijack or redirect are unforgivable. The day I started getting those on the DIS is the day I flipped on the ad blocker without guilt or hesitation.

What is the alternative? Asking people to pay to access the site? Wouldn't most people just leave DisBoards and move to a free site?

Maybe, maybe not. It would depend on how much they decide to charge, and whether the alternative would be a good fit for people. And some newbies, upon finding a site that requires payment, don't know any different and will pay.

I'm on another site (not cruising) that you can participate in without paying, but you get the ads and some limits on what you can post. Or you can pay $12 a year to get no ads and have full site options.

Everyone makes their own choice what works for them.

Doesn't DisBoards generate far more than $12 per user in revenue from ads though? I thought they were getting a penny per ad which add up to hundreds of dollars per year for the heavy users here.

I have no idea what DISboards may, or may not, get in revenue. From any source. I was just saying some people will pay, depending on the cost. Others won't.

And plenty of people use an ad blocker and they possibly get nothing.

Oh and not to mention people who reduce visits based on the redirect ads that happen here at times.

All a balance.

Most ads are based on your browsing history. For example I just ordered new mini blinds, and now am seeing ads for window treatments.
I agree, that’s normally what I get, ads similar to what I look up. But I’m 56 years old and 240 Lbs. I can assure you I did not look for ANYTHING like that on my phone! LOL
