How do transfers work?

Hello All,
I am a relatively new DVC member who has rented points in the past. Now that I am a member I am wondering how transfers of points would work.

If I am planning a trip that I know will require more points than I currently have but I don't know my dates of travel yet, can I rent points from another member but just have them transferred into my account?

If so, are there any restrictions on those transferred points? Are they bankable if my plans change?

Appreciate any guidance.

Thanks,
Hank T.

We have no experience renting points (from either side), but we do have a lot of experience borrowing points! As long as the number of points you need does not exceed what you have left for this year plus the total you would have for next year (a maximum of 2 years points), it seems like borrowing would be the easiest. You do it when you make the reservation, so you don't have to do anything until you do know the dates you want.

If you do need more points than that, you would need to rent. Member Services should be able to tell you how to transfer points from one member account to another and whether they can be banked etc.

Having read over the other replies I get the feeling that many don’t understand the system very well. There’s also a quirk or 2 about the system one might want to know. First, if the points are current year points and not banked or borrowed points, they can be transferred from one member to another. If they are banked or borrowed points they cannot be transferred. While the written rule is one transfer in OR one out each year (usually interpreted as a use year), it’s been reported by many that this has changed to allow more transfers per year but still either IN or OUT but not both. It’s also noted that they started allowing transferred points to be banked, this started at the same time as the use of holding points went from 30 to 60 days.

There’s also a quirk about transfers that one may need to know. The DVC computer is not set up to account for a different use year within the same account. This means you’ll get less than 12 months out of them. EXAMPLE Assume I transfer points from my 2003 April OKW account to my 2003 August OKW use year. Apparently the transferred points in the August use year will only be usable from August to March of 2004 and would not be accessible from April until August. I know this is contrary to the written rules but apparently the way it is.

MS has significantly more leeway with multiple contracts of a single owner and can even transfer banked or borrowed points when needed to complete a specific reservation.

I’d let the member make the reservations in your name, you can even link them to reservations you might make yourself if need be.
This is info I posted to DVCtalk earlier today and seems to apply pretty well in this case.

Thanks, Dea, for the clear explanation.. I was wondering about that myself. Sandie
