How do transfers work?

Hi. My husband and I are brand new DVC members and I have been reading the DIS boards for a while now trying to learn as much as I can! One of my biggest questions is: How does transfering points work? I understand that only one transfer a year will be allowed, but why would someone give another member their points instead of renting them? Thanks!

They are "giving" them for compensation, which is technically against the rules.

Essentially you agree to a price per point with a DVC member. They will transfer the points into your account and the points become yours. This is usually easier than renting your points because you do not have to call MS to check availability, make the reservations, add the DDP, etc. As soon as the points are transferred you are done - one easy phone call.

As for the receiving member, it is better to have the points in your account so you then can control the reservation and you do not have to go through the other member to make changes.

I just had a bunch of points transferred into my account for an 18 person 2 week trip. I found it much easier to manage all of the reservations myself - especially when some of the families changed their start/end dates for the vacation. If I had to go through separate members to change those reservations, it would have been a real pain.

Hope this helps.

You can only transfer points to an existing DVC member and this allows a clean break of your points if you have too many points (I know that is a hard concept to imagine). Of course you are selling the point useage, not giving them or renting them.

Renting points is when you have to make a reservation for a dvc or non-dvc member. Then you are responsible for the reservation and there is a trust issue for both parties. There are some questionable legal resopnsibilities if your "rentor" trashes the property. In addition, you can not sell your timeshare or the reservation is voided. Not as clean a break as transferring to a DVC member.

I PREFER to transfer excess points to a DVC member ($10-$11 per point) rather than rent to a non-DVC member ($11-$12 per point). DVC members know the rules and are easy to work with. Non-DVC owners require a lot of questions/answers and hand holding.

That is why limiting transfers hurt people like me with 500 or more point contracts.

Thanks for the info. Would the two DVC members draw up an agreement similar to what a renter would? Or is this done completely on trust?

It depends on the parties involved. I have done it both ways.

Exactly! And it still amazes me how many members here just don't seem to "get" this concept. Being able to have another member rent points to me and make reservations for me is NOT as efficient/clean as tranferring the points to me to be able to do the reservation work myself.

I also just recently had one transfer made to my account so that I could be read for a family trip of 12 people in 2007. Now I can make the reservations day by day at the 11 month window myself rather than relying on another member to make reservations for me and trying to link them to mine.
