How do people have more than 1 Home Resort?

We recently bought 160 points at AKV. Can we just buy some points in another resort and that becomes our second home? Then would we have that 11 month window at the second home as well?

That is correct. But the 11 month window is seperate for each resort. Say you have 160 AKV and 50 SSR. You can make a resie for AKV using 160 points at the 11 month window not 210. At the 7 month window you can use 210 points where ever you chose.

I have just one, but I hope to have two when the Grand Californian Villas go on sale.

Not only can you use the 160 points for 11 months out at AKV(only) and the 210 at 7 months, but you can also use the 50 points 11 months out at SSR(only):teacher:

you can use 150 points at the 11 month window, the second year you own SSR (or once every three years for the life of your ownership). But you can never mix points from 2 resorts at the 11 month mark.

If you purchase an add-on at the same resort you already own, then those points are combined at 11-months.

Example: You own 160 AKV points and later do a 50 point AKV add-on. This is treated as if it were a single 210 AKV contract. While DVC will use the points from the two contracts separately when making reservations, this is transparent to you.

Suppose you make a 180 point reservation. DVC would take the 160 points from your first AKV contract, and 20 points from your 50 point AKV contract. But that's internally within their computers. As far as you're concerned it was a 180 point reservation made using your 210 AKV points.

As others have said, if they are different resorts, then points cannot be combined at 11-months.

At 7-months points can be combined, and you will need to tell MS which points you wish to use. Example instead of the above, suppose you have 160 AKV points and 50 SSR points and want to make a 180 point reservation at BWV. You could use 160 AKV points and 20 SSR points, or maybe all 50 SSR points and 130 AKV points, or maybe 40 SSR points and 140 AKV points, and so on. Any combination you want. MS will not automatically select points from one contract or the other. You must tell them what points you wish to use.

You should plan ahead when making these decisions. In the above example if you know the following year you want to go to AKV during a popular time, you should use the 50 SSR points and 130 AKV points for your BWV reservation so that you can bank the remaining 30 AKV points making them available for an 11-month reservation next year. I.E, combine them with next year's 160 points to have 190 total points you can use at 11-months.

Welllllll that depends. If you bought all your points from Disney they will share the same use-year, then all these examples work

If you bought them outside you could have different use-years, even at the same resort. Then the 11 month for each group of points will be offset from each other. Eleven Months out for one set may be past the expiration date of the other set of points. That is one of the reason Disney normally will only sell a single use-year to a person.

We have three. :goodvibes

Same here. And all so that we have the 11 month booking window at each resort where we like to stay.

Use year has nothing to do with the 11 month booking window.

The only issue I can see with different UY's is if you have say an April and August UY and take a vacation in May it would possibly use different UY's and that could get complicated if you had to bank and/or borrow points, but if you keep all your workings out it should be fine.

When we bought our 2nd dvc in BCV we made sure to buy a resale that had the same use year so our contracts are tied together. It is so much easier to remember everything that way. The reason we did this is because with 2 DVC's we are now guaranteed to be able to vacation atleast once a year. We switch off resorts from year to year and it changes things up a little bit.

Use year has nothing to do with the 11 month booking window.

But it is worth noting that more than one use year will involve more than one banking window and tracking expiration for more than one set of points. For some people, this is "no big." For others, ONE banking and expiration window is confusing enough, adding several more would almost certainly result in errors.

More than one use year requires more work and as crisi has said, an increased possibility of errors. Simple is good. :)
