How do Muslim women...

I saw a news story on an female, Egyptian Olympic swimmer when I was flying on BBC last month. They didn't specifically address this, but I was thinking about the same thing, since she wore a head covering during the interview portions (although not the full body garb). What I noticed was that when swimming she was always in a swim cap and a body suit. However, a lot of the other swimmers wear the same thing. SHe also taught swim lessons in Egypt, and it looked like everyone in the pool there was female.

go swimming? Do they still where their veils? Or do they just not swim? :confused3

Generally, they'll go swimming on a women-only beach or pool. The orthodox Jewish women also do the same.

We saw a Muslim woman dressed in full gear (robe and veil -- is that called hijab?) at our public pool this past summer. She dove IN the pool like that. The lifeguards told her that she had to get out and she was NOT happy. A discussion between the people we were sitting with ensued....I consider myself about as tolerant as they come, but there is something very unsanitary about getting in the pool with clothes on to me.

I totally disagree! One thing that really grosses me out is seeing women (or men, but that's not usually the case) with their bare cheeks hanging out of their swimsuit, sitting on chairs without putting a towel down and then other people are going to sit there next. EWWWWWW!!! :crazy2: I'd rather see someone get into a pool with clothes on any day.

I agree! LOL, I'd rather see someone get in a pool with some clothes on than to know all that protecting me from their hoochie germs is a thong. :earboy2:

My daughter's friend from her High School is Muslim and wears the head wrap..... she IS American. It has nothing to do with Citizenship, it has to do with their Religion.

I just saw the last 15 minutes of the TV show "30 Days" about a christian men from Virginia going to live for 30 days as a Muslim. Her came out of it with a respect he never thought he would have for the Muslim faith and realised that he in fact new nothing about this faith , besides the insanities we always hear about them. I did not see the whole show , so I dont know if the place of women in Islam was presented.

there are plenty of countries where the muslims are moderate muslims, not fundamentalists. Moderate muslims dress like we do, they go to beaches and swim in public pools like we do and they wear swimwear like we do. Most of the ones I've seen in my lifetime have worn one piece suits as opposed to bikinis.

Plenty of my friends are muslim, and unless you asked them what their religion is, you wouldn't know they're muslim just by the way they dress/talk/behave. The images we see portrayed here in the USA are usually of mid-eastern women who have their whole body covered in a veil or hijab, but there are millions more muslim women who don't cover up. They wear short sleeves, tank tops, shorts, etc.

I think the entire Muslim and Islam itself is so misunderstood because we're usually only seeing one side of the picture.

I totally agree with you!! I would much rather see a person dressed like the person in question than with all of their T&A hanging out everywhere.

The amount of clothing only matters as long as it stays dry. Once it's soaked through it really doesn't matter how much of it there is or what it is covering.

All the "ewww" is flowing through. :flower:

It doesn't even have to do with the religion -- it has to do with how the culture in which they were raised has interpreted the Koran's call for women to dress modestly.

The hijab is one culture's response; the burkha is another culture's response; the chador is yet another culture's response.

Well I guess you do have a point there. :rotfl:

I dunno, it just seemed weird and kind of ick to me to see this woman and her robes floating behind her in a public pool.....maybe because I'm not used to seeing such a thing. :confused3
