how do I zip a file so I can send it to someone?

I know this should be very basic, but I don't know how to do it. I have windows xp

on my computer, i can right-click on what i want to zip and a "add to zip" option comes up.

If you have WinZip installed (it should come standard with XP) and you're only talking about one file, the easiest way is to right-click on the file and choose "Add to Zip" (or the alternative option to "Add to Zip ___.zip", where it bases the zip file name off of the original file name.
