How do I private message someone?

Both you and the person you're trying to contact via private conversation (what PMs are called here) must have at least 10 posts before the feature is available to both of you.

If both parties have at least 10 posts: click on either the person's avatar or username you are trying to start a conversation with. In the next window click on "Start a conversation". Up to 20 people can participate in a conversation. You can also find the "Start a new conversation" link if you hover over "Inbox" in the upper right and click the link there.

If someone has 10 posts and you still don't see the "Start a conversation" link when you click on their avatar, then they either just got their 10 posts (system take about 30-60 minutes to recognize it), or they've unchecked the "Accept conversations from...." box in the "Contact Details" part of the profile page.
