How do I get a stray cat to leave??

A stray cat has been staying on or near my deck all morning. It is not wearing a collar. There's something about this cat that makes me uneasy. I have not fed it or encouraged it. When I go by my screen door, it comes right over and cries. I want it to go away, but I don't want to do anything inhumane of course. I did try calling animal control, but they are not answering, probably because it's a holiday.

I'm ticked off, because it is beautiful outside and I had planned to spend most of the day on the deck. But this cat has taken over the deck, and I don't feel inclined to sit out there when that cat makes me nervous.

Help! Any suggestions? :guilty:

I would call your vet to come, seriously, bring a cage and everything, put the cat for observation for rabies, and if not, then bring it to a local shelter. :) Can you take any pics of the cat?I'd love to see her, and if shes cute shell get adopted!

If it looks well groomed, unlike being outside for a long period of time, it's most likely someone's pet that got lost. Especially because it appears not to be afraid of people. Personally, I would try to find the cats owners and then take to an adoption shelter. If the cat thinks your house is theirs, they will probably be there a long time waiting for you to let them in. If you let animal control come get it, they will take it to the SPCA or some other shelter where it will probably be euthanized after a period of time if no one claims it or adopts it.

Be kind for it's likely someone loves that cat and is heartbroken that it's missing.

Or, on another musical 'note' maybe a .38 Special...

(only kidding... don't send the ASPCA after me...)

You could put cat food on the neighbors deck. :)

I'd take a walk and see if you see any "lost cat" signs or see anyone who looks like they are looking for their cat. Or you could put up a few found cat signs. Look in the newspaper, too, and at the grocery store. Ask around.

when you figure it out, let me know. I have one that wandered up to my deck five years ago and made himself at home. he's still here... ;)

Thanks, everyone! Well, the cat left at least for now. It wandered across the street where my neighbors had company arriving. Their little 3YO boy got so excited to see this cat approaching. He started chasing it around the yard, shouting "Here kitty! Here kitty!" The cat would run away, but then approach again. When they all went inside the house, the cat was sitting outside THEIR door crying to go inside, just as it had done at my place.

Now when I went in the front yard, I don't see any sign of the cat. Not sure if my neighbors let it in, or if it walked away again.

I found out that it was crying at my next door neighbor's door early this AM before it came over to my house. My neighbor drove around the neighborhood to see if anyone was out seemingly looking for a lost pet. No luck. We'll keep our eyes open.

I sure wish the cat had a collar on it so that its owners could be contacted.

Thanks again everyone!

Awww! :thumbsup2

I am probably the very last person to ask as i currently have um...7 cats... due to this very problem.

But, I would definitely ask around. If it is that friendly, it must have had a home at some point. So sad.

We have one that hangs out in our yard and stalks the birds. It's gotten quite a few. We go outside and all that's left is a puddle of feathers.

The other morning it had a squirrel. My dh tried to save it but the cat took off with the squirrel in it's mouth.

My dh is not real happy with that cat. He loves his birds and squirrels. (Not in a weird way!)

We had a "stray" like that a couple years ago, but I fed it. When I discovered that it had no claws, I brought it inside, took it to the vet, etc. I called the pound no one was missing it, put an ad it the paper, still no one claimed it.

We had it about 6 months and we were talking to one of our neighbors, seems their next door neighbor had been missing their cat. They had been keeping the cat while their daugter built a house. Returned the cat to the rightful owner, cat came back, returned the cat again, cat came back. It seems the owner's mother had Alzheimers and kept letting the cat out and the cat perferred our house. So, I said I would just keep the cat until the daughters's house was completed. Finally, another 6 months later the owner finally came and got the cat. The house had been finished for some time, but they had been "busy".

Anyway, point being, the poor cat probably belongs to someone.
