How Dis-appointing

I dont know where people are getting these $13 to $16 per point quotes. You should have NO problem renting points from willing DVC members for $10 per point as long as you plan well in advance (the same can be said for DVC members booking their own reservations) - supply & demand.

The whole $10 per point arguement has been beaten to death on these boards. The market has proven this is the fair value (on average).

You have to look at the overall picture. If you have been to Disney for 9-10 vacations, how much money have you spent, renting DVC points or not? How much have you spent on food, cars and extras? Being a member allows you to take control of your discretionary funds and spend them how you want to on your vacation (no extra $5 water bottles). Timesharing is a vehicle to capture inflation, it is for your vacationing only. What you are doing for other members by renting their points, you could be doing it for yourself and your family. People from Canada get really hung up on the purchase because of the exchange rate too. But long term, you have to realize that not only is DVC a vehicle for inflation but for Canadians it is also a way to overcome the exchange. After you break even (you would have to be close if you added up your expenditures to date) your cost now becomes at a 60-75% discount off the rack rates ALL THE TIME, that is at par. Now if the exchange rate is bad, you are still saving the exchange and any inflation. If you choose to rent points out, you are getting paid in dollars and can off set your dues or travel costs. You have to look more long term instead of one trip at a time. You definitely would benefit from membership, most of my old members from Canada, once they realized this, ended up with a lot of points. Even if you start with 150 and check out on weekends, you would save a ton over time. Maybe you could come down twice a year instead of once. Look at your total expenditures and ask yourself for the same money would I want to come once or twice? Or would that second trip pay my dues?

We've figured that the folks who have rented from us saved about 40% as compared to what they would have had to pay for the accommodations otherwise.

Interresting....
First - don't assume everyone has an AP - we're owners, and we don't. Many renters don't go 2 or 3 times s year - that's why they are renting in the first place! No AP - No AP discount....
My renter last time saved over 40% - I'd say she got a pretty nice deal......

I met numerous guests that were staying on rented points during very low seasons paying members $10 per point. DVC is not quick to discount the rack rates on villas because technically the villas are managed through DVC. So, it appears that someone is saving a lot by renting points, but I always found it amusing that someone would pay $110 per night for a studio when a room at Port Orleans was around $75, to earn $500-$600 for 55 points or so would benefit the person from Canada because it would off set their dues. Each year their expenditures are not accumulating anything.

If you charge $10 pp it's not worth it for a non dvc member to rent considering all the hoops you have to go through and the risks involved AND you don't get the daily housekeeping service for a savings of under $300?

I'm not the "brightest bulb on the tree"...but...I'm also not understanding your issue

I am a DVC member..but..had occassion to rent points for a solo trip this past Sept., BWV, studio, Fri-Wed, 68 pts ($680) vs. $1300+ Disney.

My experience with the renter was smooth and uneventful and since mom taught me how to make my bed, housekeeping wasn't an issue either. :rotfl2: :rotfl2:

I would definitely do it again! :goodvibes

Unless I missed it somewhere, I didn't see what the OP was comparing renting points 'to' . For example, if you were to compare renting points for a weeks stay vs. a value resort, of course it will seem high.

I averaged paying $161 per night for a studio at BWV renting points when PO was around $75. But i stayed at BWV. I walked to Epcot and MGM. I had interior hallways and a balcony. I had a queen size bed. I had 7 restaurants within a 5 minute walk. I had valet service. I paid for it and I used it. Worth it to me!!!

What the OP and most prospective renters don't understand is that a DVC studio room and a room at a moderate or value do not compare to each other. If you want the value room experience...stay there. If you want a delux room with a mini kitchen and more of a "home away from home" feel and more space, rent a DVC studio, or better yet, a 1,2 or 3 bedroom villa. I personally did not buy points to rent out. In nearly 9 years of ownership, I have never rented out points, and don't intend to anytime soon. I only have 380, so I barely have enough for my own use!

Disney manages their costs by inventory. If they have a ton of rooms available in an off season for example, they will lower their rack rates or make some kind of special. While the beach club villa probably was that cost, it is not part of the mix that WDW discounts. So if occupancy is down 40%, no one in the hotels is paying rack rate except someone paying cash in a DVC villa. So yes it is a savings on the villa, no doubt. But usually (because members rent points off season, no weekends) there are far cheaper accomodations on property than the DVC resorts. It is definitely a good deal for members, no doubt about it.

One other question for you DVC folks. We are in our early 60's. We would
definitely consider buying, but I'm afraid we wouldn't get to take advantage
the number of years if you get my drift. We're both healthy and active now,
but who knows?

I would consider a resale if I were you. The years on your contract will be less but so will your investment. You can find out about resales on the DVC board.

I'm curious what room rates you have been quoted by CRO to reach this conclusion? Unless you are staying for only a few days, during high season, or on a weekend, I find this hard to believe as I know what the rack rates are.

If you want to rent points consistently why wouldn't you try to buy a small little contract resale and then if you ever needed more points you could receive a transfer from another member. Then YOU would have total control of your reservations. As YOU would be a member.

There's nothing like calling up DVC 2 months out (which I just did this on Monday) and grabbing a studio for five nights for my kids when everything else I can find on property on cash (even a value) is at least $100 a night with tax. And a value resort doesn't hold a candle to a home away from home studio room, much less one of the bigger units. You really ought to join - it's great. And YOU would have control of your reservations then - staying deluxe at value to moderate prices (actually even less than that for a member) - it works for me :flower:

The only negative would be that a small little resale purchase could lead to a BIG purchase of points. We thought 150 would be all we ever needed. Yeah, right. We bring kids, nieces, nephews, grandpa, grandma, etc. We're up to 340 now.

P.S. Maybe a small little resale contract might be the way to talk your husband into joining. Just an idea :goodvibes Ease him into it . . .

When doing your comparison, were you getting rates from CRO on DVC villas or standard hotel rooms? I would find it hard to believe they could ever offer rates on villas for a lower price than renting points from a member (with the exception of the recent $38 special @ SSR!). As far as renting points for $5-6...most members would barely cover their annual maintenance fees if they accepted such a low price. Just keep checking, you'll find the solution that's best for you. :)

Me too. You can rent a week in a standard view BWV Studio for $850 (including tax) meaning about $109 a night plus tax. Puts you in a Deluxe hotel with a mini kitchen right in the middle of WDW to walk to 2 parks and enjoy the Boardwalk as well. How can this be a bad deal when it probably is $2500 for a week in regular hotel room at the BW Inn next door?

this is something I have been kicking around, I have 3 contracts, one is for 196, one is for 29 and one is for 35, I thought about selling the 29 and 196, then just renting points when I need them, but with the profit I will make, I could put that in the bank and cover the cost of renting and make some profit on the interest!!

Hate to tell you but that won't happen! Many posts I have read over on the DVC board feel the $10 a point is too low and makes it way too easy for people to rent points and enjoy the DVC resorts without the cost and commitment owners pay. I would never rent points to anybody but family because that is way too low in my book.
I have rented out points before and we were getting 10 a point...........i just informed my 3 renters that starting in 2006 if they want to deal with me again the price is 14 a point. One emailed me back no problem already. They need 157 points and i will help them..............they have rented from us 8 times so the extra 4 a point is worth it to them...............my wife dealt with a family emergency with them and redid their ressies without a hitch.............renters will pay up if you treat them well over time. Problem we have is that they always want to rent our points.............we have alot but we use them most yrs.............with 2005 being a very rare exception..............but we did still use 760 points on our own this yr.

Friends of ours rented points from us @ $10/point ($80/night) and stayed in a Studio at OKW. They thought it was a great price and were impressed by the size of the room and the overall feel of the resort. A comparable price might have gotten them a standard room at an AS or maybe even a mod if they booked using an amazing discount code.

I'm sure that the OP is just trying to get someone to rent to them for less than $10/point...which as has already been pointed out, is a great bargain considering what you get for the money. In the past, we used discount codes when booking mods and thought we were getting a sweet deal. Now that we're DVCer's, we know the real truth about sweet deals ;)

[If all you want is a "room", stay at All Star. Those who only stay in studios, are missing the whole point of timeshare ownership.{QUOTE]

I couldn't agree more with this statement. Anyone besides a couple buying into a timeshare to stay in a studio is out of their minds IMO. You might as well rent a hotel room. 1, 2 and 3 bedroom villas are where it is at. We are a family of 3 and we still book 2 bedroom units for our stays. We even stayed in a Beach Cottage at VB with just 4 people. You cannot put a price tag on that extra space and privacy. To put our 3 year old to bed in his own room and then be able to relax on the balcony or in the living room with a glass of wine before taking a dip in the jacuzzi is priceless. We bought in for this very reason. Hotel rooms are not an option for us. We either stay in our DVC units or book suites at top resorts which is tremendously expensive. DVC isn't for everyone, but it sure is for us.
