How Difficult is it to Change a Reservation?

After reading some posts, related to the complications of canceling and then trying to re-use the points, I am wondering if changing reservations is just as complicated.

Suppose I make reservations at OKW.
Then, when the 7 month window hits, I decide I want to check availability at Wilderness Lodge Villas.
Can I change my reservation from OKW to Wilderness Lodge, if I find that is available?
OR,
Do I have to cancel my OKW reservation if I want to use those points for my Wilderness Lodge reservation.

If you want to use the same points you used to book OKW to now book VWL, yes you do have to cancel and book. However, this is usually done seamlessly by MS while you are making the reservation. The only snag is if what you want to change to (i.e., VWL) does not have availability. Then you may have to decide to go on the wait list and whether to only switch if you get all your days at once or to take the chance of having some nights at one resort and some at another by booking "day-by-day".

Things sound complicated, but in practice it's usually no problem.

Yes.

Or, you would need sufficient points to book your new ressie first, then cancel your old one, or...

You could waitlist a day at a time for your new one, and have MS cancel the corresponding day off of your old one. You would need to have sufficient points to make up the daily difference between OKW and VWL points.

Changing ressies is not a problem; but the availability of what you want could be.

some people book their home resort at the 11 month and then cancel at the 7 month if their non home resort is available. book okw at 11 month then you can ask ms to check at the 7 month for vwl and if available they can cancel the okw and transfer the points onto vwl ressies, but be careful, just in case you have used borrow points and then for some reason you have to cancel all together your borrowed points will remain into your current use year and expire the same time as your current points.
