How did you convince your spouse to add more points?

We bought 160 points about 6 years ago and it just is not enough. I want to add on 40 or 50 points and I can't convince my DH. He loves Disney as much as I do, but says the price has gone up too much and he doesn't want to have to pay more in maintence fees every year. I have to find a way to convince him. I know they have a special going on right now, but you have to add 100 points and I know we couldn't swing that. How did you convince your other half? Any tips?

Depending on your home resort, you could pay about half the amount that DVC is selling points for direct. Maybe that would spark DH's interest. Alternatively, you could get twice as many points for the same price as direct.

There are some real deals on SSR and AKV right now. Small contracts come up pretty regularly on the resale market, but they get scooped up fast, so if you do decide to go resale and only want 50 points, you will need to jump on the first one you see that is in your desired UY and price range. Any hesitation, and it might be gone within minutes!

Of course, with resale, you need to have the cash on hand, since financing is not as readily available as with direct purchases.

I'm with your husband, the direct purchase price has gone up too much. Are you considering resale?

When you say "It's not enough?" Do you mean that you don't have the points to cover all the vacations you're currently taking? Or do you want more points so that you can go to more often?

If it's the latter, you could consider renting through a service like DVC By Request when you're out of points. No worries about maintenance fees, and the cost is certainly reasonable.

If I found my home resort (AKL) with the same use year through a resale would I be able to combine them or would I have two seperate contracts?

Right now it cover two trips (one a year) and the third trip we usually stay at a moderate resort. We like to go for 8 or 9 days at a time.

OP: I'm guessing you've been using studio units? Try booking a shorter stay (if needed) in a 1BR unit at OKW, BWV or one of the other properties with the large (easily sharable) jetted tub. ;)

A good soak in the tub ought to help incentivize him towards an add-on ...

We get a 1BR but we usually get a standard view at BWV or AKL to save points. Our nine day trip gets us two trips in three years. BLT and BCV are so nice, but a lot more points. I think those extra 40 or 50 would help us to be able to stay there.

:thumbsup2 I like this idea! My DBF is reading this over my shoulder, so I'll have to store these ideas for later on, when he (hopefully) forgets so I can put them into play for more points. Come on Poly DVC!

If you find an AKV resale with the same UY, you can use your current points and the new points all as one contract. If you purchase an AKV resale with a different UY, you would have to transfer the points from one contract to the other to use them together at the 11 month mark.

We have 5 contracts at AKV, with one 50 point contract being a different UY than the others, and we just transfer the points from the 50 point contract to our larger contract with our original UY. It works out fine for us.

If you are not in a hurry, I would suggest watching the resales for a contract with the same UY as your current contract. It simplifies your life to have everything with the same UY.

Sounds like a good plan. I have waited this long. I will start to check. Thanks for the advice.

We have a "vacation fund" that we put money into each month. When it gets to a certain amount we have tended to add on. I wait and find the right contract at the time we have the payment covered and let her know what the plan is and just kind of do it... :p

We're still married and she doesn't seem to mind we're spending 12 days at Aulani over Christmas.

We spent a very long afternoon at Leaping Horse Libations, surrounded by the ambience and beauty of the BWV. That's all it took. :rotfl2:

Although I'm the vacation planner and the one behind buying into DVC, I am not convinced we need more points. I am totally fine booking stays at POR, etc, if we're out of points.

But DH wants more points. The way he will have to look at it when it's time to think about it is resale, and then he'll have to be a bigger part of the future planning for trips so we can talk things through and not goof anything up while planning. Since it's hard for him to really focus on that stuff, that'll delay things.

Showed DW our plans for future trips, our new DGS was on the way, our current points usage over the last few years, how we are alway borrowing from next UY, and she was convinced.
Found the right contract and we paid within $1.00 of the original points we bought back in '93.

I'll second the 'stay in a 1 BR' sentiment... We've stayed in a studio at OKW, using a friend's points, just me & dh. Then we stayed in a 1 BR at SSR, just dh & me. Both of those trips were just long weekends & I should make mention of the fact that dh is very much a non-Disney person. Then, this June, we took our 2 boys (14 & 11) for 6 days, in a 1 BR at Kidani. I think it was day 2, maybe day 3, when dh said, "Why didn't we book a 2 BR?" (finding ourselves holed up in the bedroom b/c the boys were camped in the living room) I simply said, "We don't have enough points for that." My non-Disney dh? Immediately responded with "Well, how many more points do we need to be able to do that?"

He enjoyed having the living area to lounge in & missed it when it was gone... FTR, we're not even looking for points yet, but the day will come!

We have added-on twice. DH declared we needed more points on our first trip. BWV boardwalk view and he was in for 100 more points. I agree with others who suggest the 1 bedroom tactic....it works!

We added on 3 times. I explained my reasoning to my wife and she was agreeable for the first two, the third was like, do whatever you want.
Now that we are empty nesters, I think we have too many points but I can't convince her to sell a contract or two.
Here's the reasoning. Originally we bought 164 Okw points worth 6 nights magic season in a 1br. I got worried about a point reallocation and Okw was sold out so we added 64 Bwv points equal to a fri/sat magic season preferred view, thinking we could borrow to complete an Okw reservation if needed at 7 months. Then we added 50 points at bcv for access to stormalong bay. 50 was the minimum for financing.
The 3rd add on was 100 more Bwv points just because the bw view is awesome and I wanted a larger room then a studio.
That's 378 points, plenty for us in the older resorts. Not so many if we are looking for more than a few days at GFV or blt.

Thanks for the replies. I will keep looking for a resale and keep trying to convince him! I am persistent.

How do I convince my DH to agree to the MANY add ons that we have already completed??? Nope can't answer that one on this Disney family orientated DIS....LMAO!!!
