How did you and your SO come up with names for your child(ren)?

the choices were Elizabeth, Abigail, or Olivia
she was almost Abigail Elizabeth
but we decided on Olivia Abigail
Olivia was always a fav of DH. It is the name of the mother on the Walton's tv show.

If she was a boy she was going to be Phillip Jason
phillip we both liked and Jason for DH

I am preggers again and somehow Phillip doesn't appeal to me anymore. DH is crushed.
I like Connor Jason. He is less than thrilled
I am also batting around Ian, Evan, or Ethan
For a girl I like Emma or Claire

I chose Heather b/c I wanted to name DD after my grandfather and Herman wouldnt have worked for a girl, and Cecilia (middle name) after my mother in law... who has yet to see her first grandchild strangely enough (shes 11)

Ds #1--Michael Robert---Michael was my x's name and Robert was my grandfathers name.

Ds #2--Matthew Ryan--I wanted Tyler, my x wanted Sean and we both liked matthew.

By the way I hate it when ppl call the Mike or Matt. New dh and 2 more ds.

Ds #3--Evan Nicholas--I loved Evan as soon as I heard it. Dh was a little hard to convince, he is into tradional names. My mom picked Nicholas.

Ds#4--Connor David--Again Connor was my idea, dh wanted Eric.
Since Davis is dh name I got to have Connor.

Girl names I liked: with Michael it was Katie. With the others I liked Kristen. I still love that name.

Travis was for Col. William Barrett Travis, a martyr of the Alamo

Warren was for a dear friend who died suddenly during my 7th month of pregnancy

Willson is my husband's grandmother's maiden name

Having two middle names helps take the sting out of having such a common last name, Johnson.

DD #1 Hannah Leigh - I just liked the name Hannah, of course I did not know of anyone with the name, I just thought it sounded simple but pretty. The Leigh just sounded right to me. Of course she thinks she was named after the Puff the Magic Dragon song. Of course now the name is quite popular.

DS#1 Thomas Allen - I had picked the name Benjamin out if the first had been a boy but by the time I got pregnant again I really didn't like the name. Thomas is my husband's grandfather's name and Allen is his name.

DD#2 - Abigail Lynne - I wanted to name her Emma but I had heard of too many Emily's . I picked Abigail because it seemed to fit with the other kids' names. Of course we call her Abby all the time.

John-Cole's name was,

John for his daddy and Cole which is short for Colin which was my grandaddy.

If we have a little girl one day she will be either,

Karley Barbara or Barbara Marissa (Barbara is my mom and I just like Karley and Marissa)

If we have another boy he will be

Shane Hunter

We couldn't decide on a name for our dd, all his choices were NOT my choice. It took us awhile. He found the name Sara and saw it meant Princess. I liked that name early on, but he didn't. He told me we could name her Sara and she could be daddy's little princess. 10 years later, he insists he never said that though. Her middle name is a blend of my mom's middle name and my grandmother's middle name, and it just so happens to be a form of my SIL's middle name.:) Kaytlin.:) We both loved the name Katie, but we each have a cousin named Katie.:( My dd loves for me to call her Sara Kayt though.:)

He loved the name Dakota when he used to watch The CowBulls of Moomasa. Our ds has his middle name. I wanted the name Luke.

I picked out Ashli's name myself. My dh didn't really care one way or the other about most names which just about killed me. I wanted him to have an opinion about it and hopefully tell me some wonderful name that he just loved but that's not what happened. Most names I suggested got an answer of "Sounds fine to me honey, you pick one that you really like". Occasionally he did veto one or two. I like the name Ashley but I spelled it Ashli because my mom and all of my sisters spell their names with and I instead of a Y. (Jaci, Kimi, Keli, Wendi, Suzi, Buffi). I know, it's so cute it makes you sick but that's the way we are, lol. So Ashley turned into Ashli. I knew my dd's middle name would be Marie before I figured out the first name. That was the priority because it's my middle name as well as my mother's middle name and I wanted to carry on the tradition. Ashli has already said that her first dd will have the middle name Marie also which I really appreciate.

He loved the name Dakota.

Speaking of the name Dakota, my little cousin's son is Justin Dakota. He and his DW (who are both country hicks) got Justin from the boot company, and Dakota from the Dodge truck.

As for me, my parents just liked the names Rebecca Diane, though I don't neccesarily strongly like either one. Growing up, I was called Becky, then when I was 12 Rebecca, then fall 1997 I changed it to Diane. Now, I'm wishing that I had more middle names. Perhaps Anne or Annie next?

If I had kids, they will definately have more than one mn, and all of the names will have more nickname potential than mine do.

My brother's name is Michael Alan. My maternal grandmother hated the way my parents spelled Alan-it was not a common spelling back in 1975. If I had been born on time (I was two weeks early-which was typical of my later impatience) I would have been named Allison Michelle. My bother initials are M.A. so they wanted my initials to be A.M.

I don't know which is worse: Rebecca Diane or Allison Michelle. On the other hand I always suggest to expectant parents to name their child Rebecca or Diane, after me of course.

We wrote down all of the names that we liked on a piece of paper and then we switched lists and eliminated what we didn't like from the others list. Then when we were down to a couple of names we discussed it, still couldn't agree, so we put the names in a hat and the best out of three won. Then we had to come up with a middle name....I came up with the winning name because I chose DH's middle name and once he discovered DS would have the same initials as he does and that he shared his middle name he was happy.

BTW, my son's name is Tyler Steven.

On a side note, one of the names that I really wanted, but DH was against was Jacob or Jake for short, but DH said absolutely not! A friend of ours had a baby a couple of weeks ago and chose the name Jacob and DH says, wow that is a really nice name. :( I pointed out that I had wanted that name for our son and he said it is a nice name for someone else, just not us! Sheesh....men!

The only thing we were sure on at the time was a girls name, if we had had a girl she would have been names Jessica Marie.

My oldest (DS) was gonna be Christopher John. Christopher because NO ONE else was named that in our LARGE family and, John for my brother (Godfather to DS) and, also my Dad's middle name (that he goes by). But, my Grandma told me in the last weeks of my pregnancy (and, in her life) that my deceased Grandpa's name (before he was adopted) was Matthew. No other Matthews in the family and, I liked the Biblical sounding 'Matthew John'. Encompassed Grandpa, Dad and my Bro (DS's Godfather).

With DD, we debated. I really wanted Katie. DH didn't. We agreed on Kelly (even tho I have a long-distance, older cousin named Kelly). I didn't want a 'formal' name, aka Catherine, Kathleen, etc. I just wanted the short form so, Kelly seemed more suited for a non-formal name. Her middle name is totally fabricated by me, in December, near Christmas, NICOLE. ala St. Nick, Christmas, whatever. I know it's lame but, we don't have any other Nicoles either!

Matt would have been Jillian Gail for a girl and,
Kelly would have been William or Michael for a boy (middle name undecided).

My baby brother was going to be named Rory, either way and, he was! Now I see how many Rory's out there are FEMALE! AND, it's gotten a little more popular, too! ;)

I do but, original Rory of MY family (an Uncle) is named for/after Rory Calhoun. All the rest are after-thoughts! ;)

I really love that my family has 2 Rory's! I love that name! :smooth:

DH and I would talk about names several years before we actually had DS and we came up with Kimberly Christine or Elizabeth Nicole for a girl and Christian Anthony for a boy.

By the time we were actually expecting DS we really didn't like Christian Anthony anymore so we knew we needed to come up with a new boys name and then we needed to pick one of the girls names. The more I thought about the girl's name I started to feel like we should change one of them to honor my grandmother who had passed away just a few months before. So we went with Kimberly Grace for a gril because I didn't like the way Elizabeth Grace sounded.

We had a very hard time coming up with boys names. We discussed names endlessly. We read baby name books and made lists, etc. Finally just about 2 weeks before our ultrasound we were driving back from my in-laws (we had a lot of name discussions while driving :) ) DH said Nathan and I LOVED it. I don't know why I didn't come up with it myself. ;) We then started tossing around middle names and I came up with Alexander. I always loved that name (I even named my Cabbage Patch kid Alex) and I thought it went well with Nathan. DH was not thrilled with the middle name so we continued to discuss middle names up until DS was born. By the time he was born we had narrowed in down to Nathan Cole, Nathan Lore or Nathan Alexander. In the end I got Alexander.....after all it was the least he could do to give in on the middle name after all I had just gone through to get him into the world. ;)

we don't have kids yet and we aren't even pregnant, but we do have their names picked out!!

all of our boys will share the same first name but will go by his middle name. it's a family tradition that my DH wanted to establish. he has one son already and his first name is matthew (after his daddy) but he goes by his middle name. our first born son will be matthew dawson.

our girl's name was pretty easy. DH really loves the name elizabeth. it's a historical thing with his family...but he's always loved the fact the i have 2 middle names and since the boys will be named for daddy, then the girls will have 2 middle names like their mommy! our first born daughter will be elizabeth fay jean. elizabeth, again cuz DH likes it, fay is after my mother, and jean has a triple purpose...it's one of my middle names, it's DH's mom's middle name, and it was my beloved grandmother's middle name.

My h didn't want to look at baby name books or have much to do with all that. So, I wrote down a list of all the names I liked and handed it to him. I had him cross off the ones he didn't like and we chose from what was left.
We did that with both girls first names.

Brittany's middle name is Amber.
So three generations have middle names that start with A.

Kelsea's middle name is Lynn.
His sister's name is Lynnette, my sister's middle name is Lynn, and one of my favorite aunt's name was Marilyn.
I really wanted her name to be Katie, but he knew someone with that name and didn't want it.

Names were a big issue to me...that HAD to mean something to us. :D

Kirk Stephen - Kirk was my maiden name, Stephen was for one of DH's foster brothers who passed away.

Jeana Rose - Jeana is for DH's mother who passed away when I was 7 months pregnants (her name was Jean) and Rose for his sister Rosalie

Jessica Erin - I let DH pick out the first name and it was a name he always liked. Erin I picked because we found out via ultrasound that she was a girl on St. Patricks Day!

The son who I delivered stillborn has a little different story behind his name, Kyle. Before I even knew I was pregnant, I had a very realistic dream of giving birth to a baby boy name Kyle. A couple weeks later, I had another dream, this time of still being pregnant, but knowing that it was with Kyle. When I found out I was indeed pregnant, I said that if this baby was a boy, it HAD to be Kyle!

DS is Richard Keith Edward. Richard for his own personality (and the fact that the greatest males in my life through the years have all been Richards!), Keith for his dad, and Edward for my dad.

If he had been a girl, it would have been Kelly Marie with Krystina Marie at a very close second. :teeth:

These days, if I could have another son, he would be Luke. No thoughts on a girl. LOL!

(Wooooooooo hooooooooooo! This is my 3,000 post!
