In the poll I answered pneumonia, but if someone were to just ask me how he died I would probably simply say "AIDS". I am 31.

That's an other shoe....sorta. At least it gives better context to the question. At first I thought this was a Aids\HIV\Sexual Orientation v. discrimination\hate thing. Now its a historical accuracy v. 15 year old's nomenclature thing. Which BTW I think your fine.

Yeah, but that shoe was in the original post! :) I thought you meant ANOTHER other shoe!

DD14 - "Who?" No idea who he was or how he died.

DS15 - "AIDS, right? Right?"

DS17 - "I don't know. I eat fine! I'm going to be 18 in ONE MONTH! Leave me alone!" (He was assuming I was going to tie this guy's death into a lesson on him eating more nutritious food, as I've been bugging him about that. He later said that he did know who Freddy Mercury was and how he died...but was lying about at least part of that.) :)

Cool Beans, you really live up to your name! I always enjoy your posts! :)

My late DFIL died of cardiac arrest brought on by kidney failure brought on by chemotherapy for his cancer.

He died of cancer. If he hadn't had cancer, he wouldn't have had chemo which wouldn't have caused kidney failure.

Good analogy.

If asked on the street, I'd say Freddie died of AIDS. If it turned into a conversation, I's say complications due to AIDS. I'm 46.

Aids is an immune deficiency. Almost all the aids related deaths are due to the individuals immune weakness. SO, its not necessarily the aids that kills them, its the other illnesses that are exacerbated by their innability to fight them off.
My father had pancreatic cancer, it wasnt the cancer that killed him, it was the doses of morphine they gave him to provide relief from pain. His heart stopped. Not due to cancer, but the overdose if you will, of morphine.
Kinda the same theory.
His death certificate reads cardiac arrest, basically that his heart stopped. Now, you know, and I know, that cancer doesnt make your heart stop.
Causes of death are interesting.
If someone had alzheimer's disease and refused to eat, basically starving themselves, the death cert would not say Alzheimer's disease.
Does this make sense? Causes of death are listed as what ULTIMATELY killed the individual. Not a disease they have.

I am 27 and I would just say AIDS. If it was a longer more in depth conversation I would talk about whatever complications he had but the short story is that he had AIDS.

For further reference I work as an RN in an ICU and when we get these patients and are discussing primary health problems we simply say AIDS. Yes, we get into all of the comorbid conditions and what opportunistic infection they may have but the short story is always AIDS. The other things would not happen if not for the AIDS infection.

I think you are trying to split hairs. I don't believe that AIDS can kill you in and of itself. Some other opportunistic disease is what ultimately kills an AIDS patient.

I said complications from AIDS. My 13 yo dd said AIDS. Whatever the cause-he died way too young. What a talent he was:sad2:

I said complications due to AIDS. I am 36. I honestly don't know exactly what he did die from but I know that he had AIDS.

Does it really matter?

We lost of the great voices of our time, far too early.

I picked complications of aids, and I am 39.

I picked "He died of complications due to AIDS".

I'm going to be 30 in Sept, and Queen is one of my favorite classic rock bands. :)

I said pneumonia/aids. I'm 34. Frankly, though, my first thought was just AIDS. It wouldn't offend me if someone else just said AIDS. Lupus runs in my family, and many people dies of complications caused by lupus. When this happens people usually just say they died because of lupus, and I think it's pretty much the same thing with AIDS.

I'm 35, and didn't know who he was, but can't imagine why someone would be offended by they way you wrote it.

My grandfather officially died from a series of heart attacks. But emphysema is what killed him, what stressed it heart, and what prevented the doctors from being able to treat his heart. When asked, I say he died of emphysema. It's the truth.

So aside from passing 10th grade biology, I'm not a medical expert, however...
I was under the impression that AIDS doesn't technically kill anyone. It compromises the immune system, making it easier for other things to kill people.

But in common usage it is that the person "died of AIDS"

40 here. I would just say he died of Aids. In a fictional story or movie, I would expect to hear it this way, because that is how people talk. However, in a magazine or newspaper, I would expect to read he died of complications from aids.

32 and I'd say AIDS although I voted complications from AIDS.
