How dark do verandah/oceanview rooms get?

My son likes it DARK when he sleeps. Are there light blocking curtains for verandah/oceanview rooms? He has problems at hotels because it is hard for us to get it dark enough. I am debating on getting an inside room just so he isn't complaining about the light. :confused3

Thanks!

Becky

I am interested about this as well. We have a veranda in Alaska next year, curious to know if my kids will sleep at all! :rotfl2:

I thought the rooms got very dark. Until I opened the curtain in the am did we even know the sun was shining.

The drapes on the verandah door make them as dark as a hotel room. If it's an issue, then go with an inside stateroom. Lotsa people love the darkness. Even tho DH loves to dress as Dracula (creature of the night) for halloween, the rest of the year he "has" to have a verandah for the fresh air.

If you are on one of the classic ships (Magic & Wonder), I'd recommend bringing a couple of clothespins to pin the curtains together. The newer ships curtains are made a little differently and we didn't need our clothespins for the curtains.

For a veranda room the curtain do a good job.He more than likely be going to bed after it's dark, so going to sleep won't be a problem. There won't be any light from the outside because you're in the middle of the ocean. My kids were always so exhausted sleeping wasn't a problem. The inside state rooms are very dark.

It gets very dark in the verandah rooms. The curtains are very heavy and don't let in any light.

Before magic portholes, I was in an inside stateroom. We didn't wake up until 1pm bc it was so dark!

The verandah rooms have heavy curtains and make it quite dark. I like it VERY dark too, and it works out well. Besides, having so much fun is tiring and the rocking of the ship is very calming... I'm out like a rock as soon as my head hits the pillow!

Our Verandah room on the Dream was very dark. I recommend covering the alarm clock with a towel though. That thing is BRIGHT!

That is absolutely correct.

If you are on the Alaska cruise remember the sun only is down for about 4 to 5 hours. You will not be blocking out the moonlight but the sunlight. I did Alaska with Princess Cruise Lines and there were people complaining about not being able to sleep because of the light coming in.

Our oceanview on the Fantasy was very dark at night. In the middle of the Caribbean there are no street lights, the only light is from the ship itself so it's dark.

The only light issues we had were from the alarm clock and the wave phones and a towel took care of that.

Or you can just turn down the brightness. Instructions are provided right next to the clock.

That is what I am worried about. I am hoping the curtains can block sun as well but I have no idea if they do or not.

Alaskan light during the "night time" hours isn't bright like mid-day, it's more of an overcast-type light. Think of it as extended twilight or early-morning sky. It really didn't bother us.

There's not only curtains on the balcony window but also a set of heavy curtains beside the bed to separate it from the seating area (usually so that you can have some privacy apart from those sleeping in the bunks). I usually left the balcony curtains open and pulled the separating curtain down to the end of the bed so that we would see light in the morning but would not have it in my eyes. If you pulled both across, you would have full darkness even when the sun is up.
