If you want to take pictures of your food, you go right ahead! You can't worry about what other people think. That being said, I only take photos in restaurants with my flash off, as I don't want to disturb the other guests. And my camera doesn't make noise either, so check on that. I would be very annoyed if someone else was taking pictures throughout their meal with a flash or a loud camera. Just remember to be considerate of your fellow diners, but who cares if they think you're weird! 
I've even taken pictures in Victoria and Albert's, though only at the Chef's Table. The lighting is so dim in the main restaurant that I couldn't trust my old camera to cpature anything without a flash. My new camera rocks low lighting, so I can't wait to try it out on our next trip
