How Comfortable or Uncomfortable are those sofa beds?

Hi! I know this is subjective. I’ve heard people complain about the comfort of some of the nicest, most luxurious and expensive home mattresses on the market. They say, “I just can’t sleep on it.” While that may be true for some individuals, I consider myself pretty average if not a bit of a “I can sleep on anything, anywhere, anytime” type of person. That’s said, how comfortable are some of these pull out sofa at places like PVC, BLT, or VGF? I mean, it’s hard for anyone to sleep with a solid bar or spring in their back.

The only reason I ask is because studios open up a lot more possibilities for us. We don’t need more room, but we may need a pull out bed from time to time. I’ve never slept on one, so I wanted to know what you all thought, especially knowing I’m not a very fragile sleeper. I am 6’3”, but I sleep fine on queen or full sized beds, which I’m led to believe is the size of the sofas.

I think it depends on your age and whether or not you have joint or muscle pain. My kid who's now 27 doesn't find them uncomfortable, my girlfriend in her 50's also found them okay, she's normal weight without any arthritis or other pain. I found them unbearable, even with the sponge mattress topper housekeeping provided on my request. I gave my sister the bed because I figured she needed it more, but that won't be happening again. I have hip pain from arthritis and am overweight. I wouldn't recommend them though for anyone who has pain or trouble sleeping.

If you have any back issues at all they are pure torture. I'm so glad to see that DVC is replacing traditional beds with the new Murphy-style in their SSR renovation. I hope they bring that feature to other hard goods renovations in the future.

I've slept on the ones in AKV and BWV, background smallish woman in her mid-fifties (at the time I slept on them). They were more comfortable than the one I have at home but, obviously, not as comfortable as a bed. I didn't wake up with any more pain than I usually do.

They are better than the bar in the back sofa beds that are in far too many hotels, but they are not as good as a bed. I have usually found that they are fine for younger adults and kids, while many older adults tend to have issues.

I slept on the pull-out sofas at Beach Club, Boardwalk, Wilderness Lodge and Kidani One-Bedroom Villas when I was in my mid-twenties. I'm short, average weight with no major health issues or discomforts, and I didn't have a problem. Some were more comfortable than others (I think Beach Club was the best), but none of them kept me from sleeping.

Thank you, all! I’m in good shape and early 40s, but I am a bigger guy from weightlifting. It sounds like it wouldn’t be comfortable. I can handle pretty rugged conditions, but the question is why I’d want to do that on vacation. I was just curious how realistic of an option it would be for me. Thanks for the advise!

If you can sleep in a sleeping bag on hard ground or with just a small cushion, you're probably okay. Otherwise, no! I can't do either!

Well, we have a king size mattress at home, and the beds look kind of small in the studios. I have to ask myself what is more comfortable: A pull out couch or my fiancé’s knee in my back (just kidding if she’s reading this...love you).

The sleep sofas at AKL are awful to sit on and I can't imagine they are comfortable to sleep on. OKW has new sleeper sofas which are comfy to sit on. We didn't open it up but they are new.

Yeah, we have enough points for one bedrooms on some of our trips, but we’d like to do studios on some of our quicker, day-in-the-park trips. However, I can’t imagine much worse than a day in the parks where you are hurting and exhausted due to lack of sleep.

So, I'm in my mid-40's and 6'1" / 215 lbs. and I actually don't find the pull outs that bad. They're not the old style with the bar in your back. I've slept on the Poly's and the Grand Floridian's without any issue/concern. Part of that could be we were pretty tired each night and a pile of rocks may have been ok - but they didn't bother me.

We just got back from a BCV stay in a 1BR and our daughter (high school and 5'5") slept on that pull out and said it was fine for her.

It depends on the resort, but in general not good.

Overall comfort level is as follows from best to worst in my experience:
  1. Regular Beds
  2. Murphy Beds (as long as you fit, even the ones under the TVs are ok)
  3. Pull out sleep chair
  4. Buy a cheap air mattress from Amazon, have it delivered and sleep on the floor
  5. Added: Murphy beds you don't fit on. Depending on how you fit, this might go at number 4.
  6. Sofa Bed, but buy a cheap mattress topper from Amazon and have it delivered
  7. The floor with nothing but a blanket on top of you
  8. Sofa bed with no mattress topper

I think that sums it up fairly well.

Id put murphy beds you dont fit in at 5.

Depending on how far off you are from fitting, those might even go in at 4. I know some people over 6 feet tall that fit on the pull out chairs ok, but definitely not the under the TV beds.

I find the single sleeper pullout chairs in the one bedrooms and larger units more comfortable than the pull out couches. Remember that OKW studios have 2 real queen sized beds, and are less points than many other locations.

I have slept on the one a VGF and it was good, no complaints; you´ll be fine. I also slept on the single Murphy bed at VGF and thought that was fine too, but I´m not 6´3. I am 5´5 and Pooh shaped, and slept fine, better than I was in the master with a snoring dh!
