How come DCL isn't selling out?

It might not but it is true. Many have spoken to several travel insurance companies and they have said the same. Travel insurance doesn't consider gift cards as money
That's Interesting I seen a lot of posts where people pay off their cruises with gift cards. I would never use gift cards to book a cruise. I get a lot of protection using a credit card. I only buy them to use as OBC.

When cruises were being cancelled right and left due to COVID, there were multiple posters on here with thousands of dollars that were refunded to gift cards as well. (They were able to use them eventually, but imagine...). Gift cards can't get turned back into real money, either.

I just booked my first Disney Cruise (I’ve been on RCCL, Carnival & NCL) We only booked it because it was a VGT rate for first week of September …so the time everyone avoids. Which means lower price (well compared to other Disney Wish sailings). Looking forward to the experience. It’s tagged into a 2 week trip to Orlando. Staying at Pop for a couple nights before. Then off-site time share after.

Booked thru Costco, so a little extra back after. (Although need to call them, as I apparently logged into my old Costco account, which is attached to an inactive
membership #, so need to try and transfer to my active account. Only noticed when I got the confirmation and my address was wrong)

Going back to the original question, I do agree that pricing and competition are major factors, but for me it's about value for money. If I'm paying more I want to feel that the extra is worth it.

My kids were Oceaneer club ages on our first two DCL cruises on the Fantasy. They loved it and we enjoyed the adult areas.

We were excited about DCL coming to Sydney and not having the cost or hassle of flying to Florida so went on the Wonder in January. Our kids were Vibe ages for that cruise and didn't like it at all and don't want to do another DCL cruise. Maybe it was the ship behind smaller and missing some of the for fun things from the Fantasy that weren't on the Wonder, but the service wasn't as good as previously and nor was the food. We really didn't think the value for money was quite there on that cruise.

We paid the $250 to get a discount on another cruise but only because it was fully refundable and because we thought we might try DCL without the kids. We're having second thoughts seeing the prices go higher and the value proposition go lower.

People get more and more conscious about how they spend their money, take more time to think before big purchases and looking at other alternatives.

On this board, among the loyal fans, there are often discussions about 'best cruiseline for Alaska' or 'how does line X compare to Disney'. People question if Disney's premium is worth it.

One interesting thing on cost, is that the Concierge cabins on the Wish and Treasure (I haven't checked the other ships) are selling really really well. If anything, those prices could still be higher on average.
When I was looking at availability for our summer 2025 cruise on the Treasure, the price difference was only 4k between our family verandah and concierge which doesn't feel that bad.

We took a cruise on the Wonder over New Years 2022/2023 that we booked on a CDN residents rate! And currently we have a cruise out of Galveston for March 2025 (9 months away!) booked on a CDN residents rate. So there are definitely lots of cruises that are not selling well.
Canada is obviously huge, but where in Canada are you flying out of to Galveston. I feel like I've exhausted all of the ports for sailings leaving out of Florida, but Galveston flights are significantly higher than to FLL, MCO, or MIA.

My CC provides trip protection if I use my CC to buy GC's and use those to pay for my cruise. It might be worth verifying

It does seem a little risky just to save 5%.

We just went on an Eastern Carib. on the Fantasy this summer. It was wonderful - we had a great time. But the price is insane. Now the kids are at an age that we want separate cabins. We need more space and privacy. We are looking at Alaska next and I'm not even considering Disney. We can get 2 mini suites on Princess for the same as squeezing ourselves into one cabin on Disney. And it doesn't feel like a downgrade to us - we really like Princess. It's a no brainer for us.

Keep in mind during Covid DCL itself was being generous with refunding money. Basically all you had to say was you were in contact with someone with covid (didn't need a positive test) and DCL would refund your money.

That is VERY different than filing an insurance claim

I think he was just pointing out that during that time people were getting money refunded to gift cards that they couldn't use for anything other than Disney. Another disadvantage of paying with gift cards. If I book a cruise PIF, and have to cancel before the penalty period I would not want all that money coming back onto multiple gift cards. I would want my money back to use for something else.

I think if you mind the gift cards depends on the person. I wouldn't have minded them (in fact I know we had some go back on for a sailing I caught Covid two weeks before) and to me that was fine because I bought Disney Gift Cards knowing that if the trip didn't happen then it would still happen later (and it did)

Now that I know insurance won't refund them (even back to gift cards). I am much more careful about purchasing and using them.

We're in Vancouver so we can get a direct flight to Houston or save a bit of money and drive down to Seattle for a direct flight to Houston. I've got a Google flights notification set right now for both routes (still too early to book) but right now it would be about $600CDN pp to fly from Seattle and $800CDN pp to fly from YVR. I'm hoping both prices drop a bit 😂

I looked up Virgin Voyages fares after watching some videos and was extremely surprised how relatively inexpensive it was, considering everything that’s included. Basically the only extras are alcohol, tasting classes, and taxes. Even tips and WiFi are included! I told my husband if we ever cruise by ourselves we’re definitely doing Virgin. :D
VV is so much fun! I went in 2023 and am going again in 2025 and taking my husband and some friends this time. I felt like they offered Disney-esque service alongside fantastic value, a beautiful ship with lovely staterooms, and awesome food.

If looking at Princess in Alaska, look at the 2-bedroom family suites. They price really well! They are only on some ships (i.e. Sapphire Princess) and cannot be booked online, so you will have to call or have your TA call.

After seeing the new itineraries, I don't know if we're gonna stick with dcl next year.. What other lines do yall recommend for 3 adults? I've been on royal Caribbean before, but not sure I'm thrilled with their itinaries

Exactly... We had an early April 2020 WDW trip planned that we purchased with gift cards and sure enough it happened to us. Rather than going through the whole multiple gift card refund thing, which would have been trouble. We just kept rebooking our trip until we finally took the trip in spring of 2021. So for well over a year we had all that money tied up.
