How can you tell which rides might be a problem...

I've tried to do some searches to answer this more directly without starting a new thread, but I might not know how to do it.

I've learned a lot about Mission: Space meanwhile.

I am not an amusement park junkie, so I've little experience with rides.

I've seen people be able to differentiate various experiences that rides offer which are problematic for them such as motion, centrifuge, g-force, bumpy, scarey, being upside down versus feeling like you're upside down, fast rides, etc.

How do you tell all that?

I would hate for an entire day to be ruined of a tour due to nausea or headache or something on the part of my husband, daughter (5 y.o.) and me.

I have little to go on. The merry-go-round, I'm usually fine on. I can get dizzy. The ferris wheel gets me dizzy, believe it or not. I can handle trainrides, even overnight, but on the second day can get fed up with the bumps.

I have no way of telling what that means.

One time, as a teenager, I went to a carnival and tried this caged ride that turned us around and around and then upside down. I didn't care for hurling through space upside down and then twisting while climing upward. Now, I think I'd get dizzy.

When I swim, sometimes, even with custom-made ear plugs, I can get a little dizzy. The audiologist tells me I have a jaw/ear canal motion that's the equivalent of a 60 year old's even though I'm in my mid-40s. I have no idea if that's related, but it might be why I've required custom-made ear plugs since my 20s for ear pain and dizziness with water and boy oh boy do I love to swim....

Does this help anyone in pointing me in the right direction?

I also don't know how to direct my child and husband to any rides that might not be suitable for them, if any, given some sort of sensation that they might experience and are not anatomically equipped to handle.

I have read the daredevil reports, too. Certainly, fear plays into these sort of things, too.

Some of the guide books go into pretty good detail about how a ride works and what it involves. I like the section in The Unofficial Guide to WDW called 'Rides That Eat Adults'.

Nothing bothers me so I am not a good one to give advice. My Husband avoids anything with a shoulder harnes and that seems to work for him.

I was going to go to bed but I began to feel guilty about my above post. Maybe your being serious, if so, no offense. My advice would be to avoid any ride with height requirements. Most of the rides in WDW are pretty easy on you. And the rough ones have warnings. Don't worry, you'll have a ton of fun.

I think of very few of the rides at Disney as comparable to those at, like, Six Flags. They're usually different, and pretty lame... in a good way =)

I agree, pick up an unofficial guide and read the detailed descriptions. I think you'll find that most will be just fine to ride.

Unfortunately, the only way to really know is to try a ride and see how it affects you. The best thing for you to do is start out with the tamer rides (the majority of rides at WDW are tame enough for my 14 month old DD) and work your way up.

I have always had problems with motion sickness. Reading/looking down while riding in a car makes me very nauseous. I can do rides that spin, but I have problems with simulators. I also have a fear of heights, but this hasn't been a problem for me at all at WDW (well, I guess I shouldn't try the Astro Orbiter, but I never wanted to anyway, so it hasn't been an issue.) I get dizzy on ferris wheels, too, because of my fear of heights, not from the actual motion.

Bumpiness is usually more of an issue for people with back/neck problems or pregnant women.

Sounds like you might want to avoid Mission: Space due to your ear situation, but otherwise, start slow and work your way up! Have a great trip!

DO NOT go on Mission Space! Great ride but I was dizzy a couple hours after and a little nauseated. I won't go on again. The simulated rides didn't bother me. (Star Wars etc)

You can't "know" until you try them! I'd say based on what you've said you definitely need to skip Mission:Space and the simulator rides (Body Wars and Star Tours) and probably the teacups. I'm prone to motion sickness - I can't ride the teacups and I feel certain that Mission:Space will make me sick - so I'll ride it last thing before we leave for a break! I've got to give it a try! ToT doesn't bother me and the only thing that bothers me at RnR is the loud music! I bring earplugs! (I've also stuffed a torn napkin in my ears - it worked beautifully!)

None of the "mountains" at MK bother me nor does Dinosaur at AK.

Different people react differently. I even get dizzy playing some video games. For me it depends on the way the video is put on the screen (if you know what progressive scan is, I can't take rapid motion games with non-progressive scan). On some rides the video scenery could well be what makes you vomit as opposed to the motion.

I did Mission Space once and don't plan to do it again. I wasn't really sick but had to sit and rest for about half an hour afterwards and it took an hour in all before I was back to normal. At least I got to see what Mission Space was.

Disney does have warning signs in front of rides that might make you dizzy. Aside from that there is no way to tell whether you yourself will be affected for hours after you get off the ride.

Mission:Space would be the one I'd skip if I had any qualms about it. Enough people experience nausea and headaches from the spinning that it doesn't seem worth the risk, especially if you think you're prone to them.

For me, Mission:Space isn't as bad as Star Tours and Body Wars, which are basically big, shaking boxes with flashing lights.

Besides the spinning, is anyone else just a little spooked out that Gary Sinese's forehead doesn't seem to move once during the entire pre-show film? Having Gary in the attraction is great casting, but I find myself twitching involuntarily whenever I watch him closely.

I get sick easily on spinning rides. I also was surprised that I got a little ill on some of the "simulator" type rides. Then after the second day..I got the idea to take some motion sickness medicine before we left for the parks to see if it would help. It did!! I was so happy to not have to worry about feeling sick after riding. Other than that, sometimes it's hard to tell how a ride will affect you 'til after you're already done

Thank you very much for your input. Perhaps it was a little strange to go into such detail. I was trying to provide information about my experiences so that folks might help better.

I laughed at Tizminchac's initial comment, even though I was serious.

I've ruled out Mission Space for myself. My husband thinks he can do Body Wars (if it's open). He thinks the anatomical tour will be "educational" and wouldn't flinch despite my recitations of various testimonies posted. (I also wonder if he's defending that male ego). I've described Body Wars to my daughter. She's leaning against it.

Len, I guess I should have asked you this directly as we're planning the tours. I'll have to review the Guide on this one, too. I keep forgetting to look at it and it's so good.

Hey Karen,

I've replied to your e-mail, but I thought I'd post the same advice here. If I was going to risk nausea on either Body Wars or Mission:Space, I'd choose Mission:Space. It we're going to hurl, let's make the cause worthwhile.

There's a t-shirt slogan in there somewhere.

Thanks, Len.

I'm glad you shared your opinion on the boards, too.
