We are going to Disney World in a few weeks and I was wondering if anyone has any strategies on how to "win" a dream. I know it is suppose to be random, but is it really?

There is no strategy and, yes, it is completely random. A third party company has produced a software program that determines a random place, time, and prize to give out. It is evenly distributed across the entire original YOMD promotion from Oct 1, 2006 - Dec 31, 2007.

But wouldn't there be some subjective element in exactly who the dream team chooses among those that are at the appointed place at the right time?

No. The Dream Squad has a random amount of bags of prizes per day. Inside the sealed bags is a sheet of paper printed out that morning by the Dream Squad manager liason which indicated the time and location of the prize. Minutes before the prize is supposed to go the seal on the bag is broken and the envelope inside is opened. The team then simply goes to that location and gives the first X number of people to cross a certain point at a location at a specific time the prizes. The Dream Squad can't choose anyone or anywhere specific.
It would be illegal to have any bias in it since it is an officially registered sweepstakes.

All the dreams I've been reading about sound wonderful! Is there a way you can enter by mail or email?

Yes, you can enter by mailing postcards (one per person per day). You can find links to the rules and prize descriptions in this thread: http://disboards.com/showthread.php?t=1329422

And here's how to enter by mail (I use the pre-stamped postcards sold by the Post Office):
Also, starting on September 18, 2006, eligible participants can enter without being present in a Disney Property by writing their full name, complete mailing address (including postal code), daytime telephone number (including area code), and date of birth on a 3.5"x5" postcard and sending it with proper postage affixed to: (i) if a legal resident of the United States, District of Columbia, Puerto Rico, Canada or Mexico: P.O. Box 8629, Elmhurst, IL 60126; or (ii) if a legal resident of the United Kingdom: Disney Dream Giveaway, 483 Green Lanes, London N13 4BS. Participants may enter once per day during the Giveaway Period. All mail-in entries must be mailed separately, postmarked by December 31, 2007 and received by January 14, 2008 or they will be void.

We won the same prize 2x. We won dream fast passes at MK after riding Barnstormer about 20 minutes after toontown opened. Each time it was the same dreamteam at the same spot around the same time.
