how can you find out when someone was divorced?

My brother got married a year ago this last January. None of us liked or trusted this girl. There are all kinds of weird details about the whole marriage. Anyways, they decided to get divorced! YAY (although we feel bad for the baby involved)
So, last night he finds out from a friend of hers (the soon to be ex) that her divorce was never finalized until 2 months AFTER they got married!!!!
I guess the papers were filed, she never signed or responded (something like that) so the divorce happened by default. She found out about it in March.
How can we find out what the actual date was? Obviously if it was March then they were never legally married.
Any ideas, thoughts??????

I would think you should be able to contact the county where the papers would have been filed, either that or the state.

Mishetta, bigamy is a crime, but...since this woman was in the process of getting a divorce, she'd argue that she thought she was divorced, and probably wouldn't be prosecuted.

of course, if her divorce wasn't final, he rsecond marriage isn't valid. that won't affect child cusotdy/support issues, but will affect divsion of "marital" assets and any possible claim for alimony.

in NY the county clerk's office has records of divorces granted in that county, but only the parties and their attorneys have access to the records without a court order. in other states, divorce records are available to the public. in these circumstances I'd imagine that a court would most ertainly grant access to the divorce records.

At least in Mass where I got married you have to show proof of divorce in order to obtain a license.

I knew a girl, shemarried an immigrant for the purpose of getting a green card for him. then they got divorced. when she met her current husband, she lied on the marriage license application and said she'd never been married.

I always thought you had to as well. They were married in North Dakota because that is where he is stationed.
We are wondering too if the military will do anything to her since she received dependent benefits under false pretenses.
I suppose she could argue she didn't realize she wasn't divorced but I wouldn't (and don't) believe a thing she says. This girl is a real piece of work!
When my brother gets home for a visit in a couple of weeks, he's gonna get slapped up the side of the head by each and every family member! LOL
I wish my brother could go for custody because I'm afraid she may take off and he'll never see the baby again. She has 2 other children from 2 different fathers and only has custody of one of them

Was her last divorce a divorce or an annullment? That may make a difference. I did not know my annullment was finalized until 3 weeks after it was because HIS lawyers went to court and I never needed to sign or finalize anything. My lawyer checked into it for me and told me I was all set, but she didn't learna bout it till 3 weeks after the court date.
