The whole Obama thing got me thinking about when I worked with college freshman. Some of them had never been out of their town or village. They had never seen someone with dark skin or light skin or a poor person or a rich person. I used to do this with them to make them understand in the end we have differences but still we are all people.

I am judged/discriminated against because:

I am American
I am female
I am white
I am Southern born and bred with the accent
I am an army wife
I am a brunette
I come from a single mother
I am a welfare receipient
I am overweight
I go to a Catholic church
I am a Christian
I go on vacation
I come from a tiny town
I am a registered democrat

You get the point. Sometimes I hear all the bickering and intolerance that goes on in the world, especially here during the so called "debates", I want to make everyone sit down and make a list. Maybe after we all have our list, it would ring home that we are all just everyday people trying to make our way and overcome our own discriminations instead of trying to pick on others for theirs.

Well, I'll join in....

I'm an American of mostly European mixed heritage
I came from a small town from a mother that took welfare when I was 6
My Grandfather was the father figure in my life
I looked at what my mother was (a true train wreck) and determined very early on that my life would be the opposite
I graduated high school when I was 16
I moved to an urban city to go to college, where I then worked full time for more than a year in my field, I still graduated with my class
I worked in aerospace engineering, I was one of two women engineers
I worked in financial markets, there were half women, half men
I got married and had child #1, then with #2 I got sick
After child #2 I wound up in a wheelchair paralyzed from the waist down with an inability to swallow (my swallowing has now improved with intervention)
I now am in a wheelchair and people see me differently. My mind is the same as it was, but people think less of me because of the chair
I am emboldened by people who think less of me because I know who I am and what I have accomplished, I will not let my disability whether paralyzed from the neck down at times or waist down belittle who I am and what I have done
I hold no religious affiliations, but my beliefs are more closely aligned with Eastern religions

My biggest discrimination factor by far is the wheelchair, my best feature is my fully functioning, bright mind... Whenever I go out I face obstacles whether physical or judgmental. I have raised above it, and I will continue to do so, and I've encouraged others like me to do so.

I was born in Cuba
I have fair skin
I'm a SAHM
I'm an older college student
I'm pro-choice.
I don't practice any religion.
I believe the theory of evolution.
I'm a Republican

I am American.
I am a female.
I am a mother, a wife, a daughter, a sister.
I am pro-choice.
I believe that couples of any gender deserve the right to be legally recognized as couples. (I also believe that government should not be involved in marriage, as that is a religious sacrament and I believe in separation of church and state.)
I am a registered Independent.
I am middle-aged (and getting older, and more invisible, by the minute.)
I am a descendant of individuals that fought in the American Revolution and others that were forced from their native homes in the South to relocate in Oklahoma.
I love Disney.

I don't know if I was discriminated against but one of the worst beatings I ever had was because I was white and they were not.

I am an army wife
I am a registered democrat

I'm sorry, these two are contradictions. ;)

I'm white.
I'm female.
I'm a SAHM.
I'm not a "mainstream" mom, nor am I a fully "crunchy" mom.
I'm an Air Force wife.
I'm a Libertarian.
I'm blonde.
My three year old is not potty trained, and apparently is the only three year old on earth that isn't potty trained, according to my friends.
I'm "young." And "old." But more often young. ;)
I'm "rich" - according to some (not the government, though! )
I don't like dogs.
I have an only child, and he will be the only child born of me. He hopefully will not be my only child, though.

I have been with the same man for seven years (very happily) with no intention of marrying or having children.
I am deaf in one ear.
I had heart surgery.
My father is in prison.
For my own home, I am anti-gun, but believe you still have the right to carry/have guns.
I am pro-choice.
My mother and brother were/are mentally ill (Mother has since passed).
I was raised Catholic but currently don't practice anything.

I don't mean to cause trouble, but I don't get why so many of you are putting here that you're white and that's how you're discriminated against. I'd love to hear a black person chime in on this, but I totally disagree. I feel that being white has given me many privileges in life that a black person might not have gotten just by the color of their skin. And being Christian? Folks, just try going out in public somewhere -- your school, your family, your friends -- and saying that you don't believe in god. Then you'll know that you're not truly discriminated against. You probably just hear some flak once in a while based on the behavior of the extremists in your group.

But my own list would be that I'm obese and atheist.

I questioned that very same thing at first, but then I thought more about it and came to agree that people do get discriminated against based on their skin color, regardless of the color. I think that people can be discriminated against for just about anything because there are people out there who scan the horizons for things to hate about people. I mean, a PP wrote that she is discriminated against because she works at a grocery store. WTH in their right mind would have a problem with that? But some do. Other people say they are discriminated against based on their freakin' hair color! My goodness, can you imagine? But I believe them because there are indeed people out there waiting to hate you for no logical reason.

When I said I felt I had been discriminated against because I was white...I have. My former neighbors were Native American. They threw out white slurs on a daily basis. Mind you, they were off their rockers...seriously! But they HATED white people. Also, I dated a Native American woman for several years. Many of her friends felt she betrayed "her people" by dating me. So yeah, upon rethinking the whole thing, I would say that I have indeed been treated poorly based on the color of my skin. Also, when I lived in Ohio, I had been called "honky" and other rude terms by African Americans. It does happen. I hate racism of any kind, by the way. White, black, brown, yellow, purple...I see no reason why something so insignificant should matter to people.
