How can I find a missing account?

Right now I'm so frustrated with myself. My cousin died yesterday. She was estranged from the entire family sadly, although we really did love her. Her middle son is my Godchild. When he was born, I put money aside for him in what was then called an Educational IRA (now Coverdell Savings acct.). I'm the owner, he's the beneficiary. It's under my social. There was only one company that would allow me to own it as a non-parent, so I went with them. I recall that it wasn't a company that I used normally for my own investing, just one that would allow what I needed at the time. I did that because I didn't trust his father (with good reason).

I cannot for the life of me remember what company it was, and I haven't gotten statements in years since I moved. It's not showing up as unclaimed funds under my name or his in the state in which we both lived or in my current state so I have to assume it's still active with whatever company I invested with. I really want to figure out what company it was but I'm having no luck. I've tried calling all the major companies I can think of. Is there a way to track this down? I feel so dumb that I don't have any old statements.

What was your original investment - check? credit card? Can you track that way? Sympathies for the loss of your cousin.

Thank you. She is going to be missed even if she didn't realize it. The investment was by check, I'm sure of it. It would have been back in the year 2000 though, so I doubt the credit union I used back then would have those records still. Maybe I still have old bank statements with our taxes from that year though...I'm going to try that right now thanks.

ETA - After going through the old taxes just now, I think I may have invested through Stein Roe. It appears they are defunct when I google them? Maybe that's why I stopped getting statements years ago. I really hope I can find some acct. info in my paperwork. How sad if that money disappeared.

Check your state's unclaimed property list. If the account has been dormant for 15 years, it's likely it's been turned over to the state.

They weren't specifically Coverdells, but I opened a couple Stein Roe accounts in 1997 and they are now handled through Columbia Threadneedle.
