I am trying to convince my husband to join DVC before the price goes up March 31st and I am running out of time. We Take a vacation to Disney almost every year (this Feb we did the Disney Cruise). In the long run I think that it will pay off for us. Any advice on how to convince him???? :Pinkbounc

Well..first and fore most good luck.

By looking at where you stayed...Wilderness....add up the stays, room only charges. Then compare it with the cost to get into DVC. Thats where we started. We are use to the deluxe accomodations....Poly and such. We figured we spent roughly $3500 to $5000 just in the room. After are 3rd stay we said to ourselves what are we doing....we could have already paid for a DVC membership and been able to stay in larger accomodations. Low and behold this year we bought into BWV.......If you explain to him that it will eventually save you money for your stays he may come around. This is how I approached it with my wife. We to go every year and it made no sense not to join. The up front numbers are scary....trust me......but after you crunch the numbers it makes sense....and only makes sense if you plan on a WDW trip at least every year or every other year. Also every one here on the boards has a different way of calculating the true cost of joining....Do your own and see if its comfortable.
Good Luck

We did the same thing. Added up what one stay cost and went from there.
After joining DVC you also get perks~ This year they had the $100 off on annual passes which helped alot! By joining it also gives you incentive to take the vacation (which is what it looks like you are doing now, good for you! :thumbsup2 )

Good luck convincing him, get the numbers down and show him. Mine has to see it on paper before he moves on anything. It was the best decision we have ever made. Sprinkle pixie dust on him too before showing him :wizard: .
Magical dreams need a little boost sometimes~

You know my husband was "NO WAY" he wouldn't do it. But I convinced him to do the tour and within the first 10 minutes he said "YES!" I about hit the floor. The tour convinced him, he is a hotel snob and LOVED the DVC resorts!!! :cool1:

Thank's for the advice! We have two children DS is 5 and DD is 3. I think now is the best time since the kids are young and we know that Disney will be our vacation spot for years to come. My husband keeps arguing that the tickets and airfare we would still have to purchase. What kind of discounts do you get off of passes and how much do you usually spend on them for a family of four?

With young kids..same ages as ours.....its a no brainer. I love WDW as much as they do. Tickets are the same price as if you were staying a any Disney resort....we get discounts on Annual passes. The APs make a lot of sense if you plan on hitting a park 8 days or more...you save $100 off the normal price. We did APs this year because our two trips planned fall with in one calender year. Air fair is our concern as well.....we just keep tabs on the tickets prices and book when we feel ok with the $$. By the looks of it, it hasn't stop you from going to WDW yet. This past March we went down and spent about $1200 for food, fun and lots of pins. Thats not including air fair or our APs. But let me tell you...it nice at check out when you get no bill...unless you room charge.
On a side note.....if things are tight one year you can always rent your points to some one else and get the cash.

Tell him that having those points and doing all the vacation planning will make you happy. Our husbands just want us to be happy, and then they can watch the game in peace.

Whatever could you mean Tony?

Another option to consider, plan on a slightly longer vacation and drive down. I'm in NC and one thing hubby and I are talking about is driving down and spending a day in Charleston/Savannah/Jacksonville then continuing on to Disney. or on the way back :teeth:

With a family of four the savings of driving vs airfare could be considerable- even taking into account additional lodgings on the way there.

You might want to consider purchasing resale instead of direct from Disney. The price for resales tends to be lower, although the buyer normally pays closing costs. There's a link at the top of the page for current resales.

And currently DVC can use the Dining Plan.

Dudet I think you should make your husband pay attention to you about this improtant subject. You know it is a lot of money to buy into DVC. If he says no well you are out of luck. But at least you get to go every year.Goodluck.Hope you like my advice.

You may tell him this - regardless - it comes with a very BIG BUT!

We bought in to DVC 3 years ago. Our cost was about $77 a point. We bought 150 points. Today, those points are fetching anywhere from $90 to $94 a point in resale. Since we have joined we have paid about $2000 in dues.

The Net:

Cost: $11550 Purchase Cost + $2000 Dues = $13550
Present Value (150 Pts X $90) = $13500

So, for $50 we have had 4 WDW vacations!

The BIG BUT is obvious - we have been more then lucky! DVC is not an investment and you cannot be assured of having the same good fortune as we have. If you were to buy in today (via DVC or resale) you will most likely not be as lucky!

Ours was good timing and good fortune that BCV has become as popular as it has. Keep in mind - if they announced tomorrow the Resort at Contemporary people may be selling BCV contracts by the 1000's to buy in to the new resort - you never know!

As anyone on these boards will tell you immediately - DVC is not a financial investment. Rather, it is a vacation investment! But, most of the resorts have increased in value over time. All DVC members have been blessed that this is not like a traditional timeshare that plummets in value the second after the ink is dry!

Also keep in mind that you are not required to go to WDW every year! Rather, you may opt to rent your points to another member, a friend or someone advertising on this board! The income from renting your points out should easily cover your dues for 2+ years.

What I recommend is:

:wizard: Do a ton of research. Spend lots of time pouring through these boards (these boards are the best possible resource on everything DVC). A post like yours is not uncommon! Look at the decision making process others went through.

:teacher: Post questions and send PM's to other members of the board. The amount of DVC knowledge lurking here is unbelievable! Everyone on the board is passionate about Disney and DVC. And they are always willing to help! They are your greatest ally!

:badpc: Most importantly - forget all the financial aspects I told you and choose the resort you feel is right for you! I am somewhat confident in saying that baring a disaster or economic collapse - you will not lose your shirt on this investment!

:woohoo: Lastly, tell your husband that me and about everyone else on this board have one regret regarding our DVC purchase: We did not buy sooner!

Good luck and please report back and let us know how it go's!

I saw someone else's comment on the dining! Huge perk to DVC (as are the AP's). But, I am so cheap that I use spray-paint Abercrombie on my daughters t-shirts!:

One great aspect of DVC are the kitchens! This takes a HUGE bite out of the overall cost of a WDW vacation! We will splurge on two dinners over a 5 day trip - past that - we eat in our room!

For the 4 of us it would cost about $800 for the Disney Dining option (for 5 days). We typically spend no more then $200 to $250 on dinner and groceries.

In addition - we do not buy the AP's! Rather, we bought our passes a few years back and have slowly used them over the years! We have found that we do not have to go to the parks every day! On a 5 day trip we will go to 2 parks and 1 water park - and - last year we went to 1 park and 1 waterpark. There is so much to see and do - you do not have to go to the park every day.

The way we see it we are not going to WDW. Rather - we are going to a resort that just happens to be at WDW!

My DH said No, a thousand times NO!!! So for 16 years we have spent all of our 5 weeks vacation a year at WDW. WHen I looked at how much we spent on our rooms, ARGH!!!! I actually purchased in my name this year. It was a no brainer for us also. It is a prepaid vacation, and the biggest part of my vacation is paid for up front. I just pick the weeks I want to go, and call MS to make my ressie. I have not used my points yet, but had added on 3 times already. I just added on 130 SSR points and got the two free AP's. So we now have 505 at SSR and 125 at VWL. If you plan on vacationing at WDW and staying in at least a moderate, it is well worth it.
When I broke the news to DH that I purchased into DVC, he was actually very accepting of it and encouraged me to add on!!! He is not one who likes change or spending money on anything - good thing one of us does, or we'd go nowhere!!!
Good luck, I would write up a proposal for your DH and let him see the math.
Maybe he will change his mind, particularly considering the larger rooms and the full kitchen.

Thank You for the Advice! I will talk to him again this evening to see if he will break down. Mother's Day is coming and what a wonderful gift that would be!!!!

goodluck and hopefully he will realize how much you will save on your vacations. Staying at the wilderness lodge every year would cost you more than owning DVC.
