How can anyone just let points expire????

When we met with our guide to buy into BC in July, she mentioned that she keeps in touch with all of her "customers" to see how things are going, etc.

She mentioned that one customer bought in 6 years ago and has NEVER used her points; nor has she rented them or "loaned" them to family and friends. She has just continued to pay on her DVC loan but not used any of her points.

Can you imagine? Are there really people out there like this??

DH asked if we could just be added to her contract :)

Not just her loan payments...she pays dues too! Don't you think THAT little chunk of change might get her to think about using her points? Did the guide say that she has asked her about it?

Wow...that person must not be one of the ultra-compulsive planners like the DISers! We have our vacations planned for years to come! ;)

Gee, I'd be willing to offer consultation services to that member....and take my fee in points! :p

That's crazy...someone really should tell her that she can sell her DVC membership if she doesn't want it.

Hi,

This is nuts!!! Sell, rent, or gift the points @ least!!! I'd take them!

I really doubt that is true...........6 years?

Six years of never using it is very odd. However, I've been guilty of having a pretty large number of points expire due to "circumstances beyond my control".

Once a year we all wear black to mourn the loss of 2 points that passed silently a few years ago.

We had to let them go into DVC limbo. If we borrowed points in order to use them, we risked not having enough for the Millennium.

I'll get over it, really I will. :( :( :(

Maybe she thinks she's on a lay-away plan.... "1460 more days til my first trip home!!!"

I hope the quide has called her and talked to her so she UNDERSTANDS what she is doing!!

"I really doubt that is true...........6 years?"

That's what Linda told us. And, she did say she explained to the woman that she could gift/rent the points or sell the contract. She even asked why are you continuing to pay if you're not using the points? The owner acted like she just "hadn't got around" to using the points.

I would certainly think that is most uncommon.

DVCreg--this cracked me up!!!:D

Sounds like the owner has more $$$ than they need.

Actually, I'm surprised that it doesn't happen more often considering the large number of DVC members. Now granted six years is a long time - but you have to remember that not everyone who joins DVC is as gung-ho as we are, especially as time goes by. The fact that we are on this MB means that DVC is a major part of our life. But I could see some folks buying and then the complications of life and even the tragedies of life cause you to redirect your attention in any number of other directions and booking DVC vacations or even going to the trouble of banking, etc. gets over-looked. I could also see this happening alot as DVC deeds are passed down as parts of estates. DS or DD always left the DVC planning up to Mom or Dad and then all of a sudden they are not around anymore to handle it. DS or DD has all the intentions of doing something with it, but just never quite get around to it and it's just easier to pay the dues than handle selling the property. Like I said I wouldn't be surprised that it happens more than you think. I'd love to see the DVC records as far as expired points.

I too wonder how many points expire each year . that would be interesting to know.

Unfortunately we will be guilty of allowing 3 orphaned points to forever wander around in DVC point limbo:( :( :(

But we saved the other 40 by booking 5 days in March at HHI so all was not lost.

We had to let 10 points expire once. A couple of months after we joined, we did a 50 pt add on. Since we were already past our banking window, we took an impromtu trip to OKW and used 40 of the points. The other 10 we had to let expire. This was before we found these boards. If I knew then, what I know now... well, those 10 points probably wouldn't have been wasted.

What about having a thread where people could post their extra unneeded (unwanted) points?

I know it's only 2 or 3 or maybe even 10 at a time, but could make someone else's day to have these odd-lots of points.

Just an idea ;)

I have a hard time understanding anyone who would have a loan and let points expire.

I have no problem believing that people buy points and don't get around to using them if they do have a lot of money. We haven't done it on the scale of DVC points, but we've done it with season tickets to different things where we buy them and don't bother using them (and not bothering to give them away either). If the money is spent and the dues are an insignificant line item on the budget......You don't want to bother to rent (because the rental income isn't significant enough for you to bother with) and you don't know anyone closely who wants to go to Disney....yeah, I can see that.
