How big is your garage?

2 car but wish we had either an oversized 2 car or 3 car. We park both cars inside plus a tiny bit of storage (bikes, lawnmower, gardening supplies, and garbage cans)

We have a basement for the rest of our storage needs.

3 car garage. We park two of our cars in it. The third bay is for the riding lawnmower, push mower, snow blower, 4 bikes, gas grill, lawn chairs and three garbage cans and two kayaks. I wish we had a nice big shed to put all of the other stuff in, so we could park a third car in the garage in the wintertime!

I’m with you mjkacmom. No garage sadly. We bought at the height of the market in 2004 on Long Island when it seemed like we would NEVER get a house if we didn’t get one soon as prices were astronomical and climbing. Got the best we could at the time and unfortunately, that meant sacrificing a garage. We have a full basement, shed and attic though for all our stuff. DH still wishes he had a garage though.

That’s one question I have over and over reading this thread..don’t you have a basement to put a freezer? I know some areas can’t have basements but I always thought they were the standard.

Well, we certainly do. It’s the extra fridge w/freezer. A friend of ours doesn’t have a basement OR garage. They had electric run to a shed that they have an extra fridge in.

My husband got his dream garage built in 2001. It’s detached and we can fit 5 vehicles in it. It has a bathroom with a shower, wood burner, fridge, stereo system, tv, intercom, and a large loft overhead. I tell everybody it was worth every penny!

We have a basement but I didn't want to have to constantly run up and down the steps to get stuff out of the refrigerator/freezer or to put groceries in to it. I had to do that at our old house and it became a huge PITB. (We actually do have a small kitchenette with a refrigerator in the basement family room just to keep drinks and snacks cold when the kids have friends over.) So when we built this house we made sure the laundry room was big enough to accommodate a refrigerator or freezer (currently have the freezer in there) and the garage had space for a refrigerator or freezer (2nd fridge is there) as well. Both the extra freezer and the extra refrigerator are just steps away from the kitchen. Far more convenient than having to run to the basement.

Lets see: Florida house has a one and a half car garage. We have one car and one golf cart plus a large trash bin and assorted hand tools on the walls.

New York house (which we just sold and will be moving full time to Florida!!) is a two car garage with one pickup truck and one sports car, two bins (recycle and trash), three bicycles, pressure washer and assorted hand tools and ladders hanging on the walls.

We'll be getting a larger Florida house soon with a two car garage. Anyone need a pickup truck and a bunch of tools and ladders?

When a house was built also is a factor on how big a garage is.
My subdivision was built 1976 to 1979 and all houses have 2 car garages.
The west end of my street was horse pasture, they extended the street and built houses 1984 to 1987 and those all have 3 car garages.
The east end of my street was a cow pasture, they extended the street and built houses 2008 to 2010 and those all have 4 car garages.

That's one thing I hate about my house. Standard 2 car garage. Has two cars in it and some of the kids sports gear. Prior house had 3.5 car garage that housed 4 cars, riding lawn mower, etc...

Our house does have a full walkout basement and one of the rooms is 20'x25'. We have double doors, so I can...and have...fit a narrow car down there. On the hunt for one that I can stick down there now.

2 car garage. Half is my husband's tools and freezers and the other half is where I parked my car. I've since been evicted to allow for his newly acquired Corvette.

2 car garage, park a our crossover suv on one side and my ultralong hatchback "wagon" on the other side. We also have a shelf for garden supplies storage, two lawn mowers, two recycling bins, and several bikes. In the winter we bring the snowblower out of the basement and store that in the garage as well. My first house didn't have a garage and I hated it. I grew up in a household where the cars are parked in the garage so it's great to be able to park inside now. Also, I feel like I'm the only person on all of the disboards that just has a single fridge in my kitchen.

No, they’re not common here at all. Maybe some of the older farm/ranch properties. We live in a valley and when it rains the whole place is a mess. Water drains off the mountains and tends to stand. I’ve always assumed that’s why. I’ve never seen any in California either although I’m sure there are some. Drive an hour or two into Utah and it seems they all have them. Deep ditches and gardens were quite common so a place to put up canning etc. Again, an assumption on my part. Come to think of it, I don’t recall my family in Utah having garages, they usually had carports.

I could fit 7 cars in mine, but it's entirely given over to my workshop. Presently a small boat in there and a machine shop/foundry/woodshop.
