How big are the campsites?

We've actually been to Ft Wilderness many times over the years, but it's been over a decade since I was last there. We'll be going in April with our 2 children and my parents and staying in their 38' RV (not bringing a car.) Whenever we've been we've always stayed on a preferred site/loop and will be doing that again.

It's a huge rig with multiple slide-outs to make it quite roomy, but even then it'll get a little crowded at night with 4 adults and 2 kids so I was thinking about bringing a tent for myself and possibly my wife since the weather will hopefully be ideal for that in April. Would I have room for a decent-sized 11x11' tent or would I need to go with something smaller?

I've read the site specs online, but it still doesn't give a sense for the usable space around a site where you'd likely put a tent and I couldn't remember from the last time we were there. I know the surrounding areas will vary by site some, but would relatively uniform areas like the sandpit (or comparable area if it's paved on premium sites) be big enough?

We had our 37' on a preferred site with a car parked in the front and there was still open space on the sand pad. The issue is the slides, since the utility post is about 3 1/2' high that dictates how you position the MH. If it is not a full wall slide on the passenger side you should be OK with out a car.

Premium sites don't have sand pads, you need a preffered or full hook up.

And you should be able to find enough room on the site to place a tent. I've seen many campsites with rigs and tents.

And i'd toss the kids out to sleep in the tent. I wouldn't give up a soft bed for an air mattress. But if you bring some good folding chairs and lights, you can easily just hang out outside till it's time to go to bed, then you don't have to feel cramped. No one's going to feel cramped once you're asleep.

Our kids are only 2.5 and 5 so them being outside on their own's not an option yet. And since I'm the nightowl who will likely be up a good bit later than everyone else I figure (with a big enough tent to stretch out in) I can stay up late and surf or maybe even watch a little TV since I'll have full utilities and cable.

we had a 27' TT and an Expedition EL parked on a Preferred site (Loop 900) with plenty of room for a tent on the sand pad behind - my boys (then 7 & 4) elected to sleep in the tent, which surprised me! :scared1: But they loved it, wouldn't have let them do it anywhere but the Fort though!!:wizard:

Thanks for all the feedback. I've already got a little 2-man 7x7' tent, but I'm thinking about picking up a cheap 11x11' and bringing it with us in case we have room on the site as the extra space sure would be nice over the 9 nights we'll be there.

Very cool.

I know they're using Google Maps because they also want the integration with Google Earth. But Bing Maps actually appears to have a bit better image quality on the satellite view. And they've also got that really high quality 'Aerial' view from plane shots (which I personally find the best for getting your orientation as it brings things more into a 3-D perspective (while still giving a broader view.) Still, I'll definitely check it out. Thanks!
