How Beachy! How Nautical! How Grand!-An August 2014 Pre-Trip Report

Oooh, I'm in! Gives me something to do while I pass the same amount of time until our trip. popcorn::

Oooh! Will we be seeing you on 8/18 in the Solarium?

Following along! Love it when everyone in the family is a big Disney fan! :woohoo:

We really are. Even my parents, but Dad wants to go to Europe and is holding it over Mom's head. As in, "When I get to Europe, we'll go back to WDW." Tough life eh?
:rotfl:

I will be following along! Looking forward to it!

I'm a fellow YC/BC thread follower who also lives north of Boston in little old Winthrop.

Looking forward to following along on your journey!

Jay

Ok, so I'm a wee bit further north of the city than you, but I spent a lot of time in Winthrop in HS (dear friend), and I've appeared with the Playmakers there.

Who WON'T be coming on the trip.

Meet Grace.

Yes, we're crazy pet people. My family always was, and Tom has confessed to having grown up with a menagerie of pets. We are also surrounded by friends who mainly count their "children" as being the 4-legged kind.
So, this is our Grace. She's 8 years old, and the apple of our eye. Some reading this (people I personally know, and BC/YC thread followers), already know this, but we've only had 1 cat for a few months now. Up until 12/27/13, we were the proud Daddies of 2 cats. At the end of December we sadly lost Grace's brother Henry. It's a long story, but the main culprit was an undetected tumor that forced him into a permanent state of diabetic shock. It was terrible. We miss him terribly.
I didn't want to do a PTR without him, so here's a pic or two of our handsome Henry.

IMG_0107_zpsea2834e5.jpg

Now here's the silver lining. Henry hated WDW. Well, we assume he did. He was a bit of a needy kitty. Ok...he was Needy McNeederton. He got himself all worked up whenever we left, and seemed to sense when we were going on vacation. Since most of our vacations are to WDW, we decided that Henry had a strong vengeance towards WDW, and being crazy pet people, we assumed that he could talk and was carrying on an inner dialogue about how much he hated WDW. We also imagined that he really hated The Beach Club, because the first time we stayed there, I talked about it incessantly. In fact, for Christmas that year, we told people that all Henry wanted for Christmas was the deed to The Beach Club and a book of matches. :lmao:

Please tell me that we're not too crazy, and y'all imagine your pets plotting against your Disney trips too.

Right?

Right?

Bueller?

Anyway...the silver lining. So, Grace is much less needy than her brother was. We miss Henry every day, and would trade it all to get him back, BUT, since we can't, we have to admit that our lives as pet owners have gotten much easier. Grace only needs to be fed once every 36 hours, "scooped" a couple of times per week, and seems to not mind being left home alone. Truth told, it will be a big load off my shoulders when we go away this August. She's such a good girl, and was always a love bug, but has really become a little cuddle bear since Henry died. I guess she knows we need her more than ever now. I'll end this post with a pic of the 2 of them together. Next up, I'll get to my favorite part of the planning.....resort selection!

I'm sorry for your loss of Henry :( I consider our pets to be part of the family so I can imagine how tough it is to lose one. I agree with you about plotting cats - I think ours plots to injure me on a daily basis lol

So sorry about Henry! Leaving pets behind for vacation is SO hard and probably the biggest cause of stress for us. We leave our Boston Terrier, Hobart, with "grandma" and check up on him about a thousand times a day!

Beautiful babies, by the way!

So sorry about your beloved Henry, Scott.:flower3:

I am also under the category of "crazy pet people". We have 2 dogs and 1 cat. I hate leaving them at the kennel even though I know they are taken care of by the best people around. It just makes me sad. I call at least once a day while on vacation to check on them.

I too hope they bring back the turndown service cards. We got them on our honeymoon, which by the way our anniversary is tomorrow, 18 years ago and I still have them and love to look at them sometimes.

Happy trip planning!! It is half the fun.

Haha. Ours just try to thwart our Disney plans.

You betcha!

Wheeeeeeeee! I have a feeling it's going to be a riotous time!

Thank you for your kind words and Grace thanks you for the compliment.

I love turndown cards! My favorites are from BWI. I have them framed and hanging by my bed!

I'm very sorry for the loss of Henry. I'm a proud pet parent (or crazy pet person, I'll respond to either) too and I know how hard the loss of a pet can be.
Mine don't plot against us going to WDW, they just plot to try to come with us. I can't pack without some furry four legged creature in my suitcase!

Well, DP's sister-in-law makes stuffies, and made an inredible rendering of Henry, that we'll likely bring with us on this trip. I'm planning to use him Flat Stanley-Style. That's right....Henry at SAB....Henry with Teena,....Henry and Goofy etc.

So, I know y'all are dying to know where we're staying, and can't possibly tell from the title. But before I get into that, let's discuss my Disney resort history. I'm obsessed with Disney resorts. Clearly.

Here's my WDW hotel list....as in, where I've stayed.

WL
Dolphin
GF
AKL
BLT
BWI (x2)
Swan
POR (x2)
CSR
BC
YC (x2)

In addition, Tom has stayed at ASSp and ASMu.

I remember (going way back here) the Walt Disney World Happy Easter Parade, and their unveiling of the GF resort in 1988. At age 8, I decided that I wanted to stay there. Unfortunately, we didn't go to WDW again until I was 18...and though I asked to stay at the GF, the funding simply wasn't there. We did have breakfast however at 1900 Park Fare, and I vowed that one day I'd stay there, and it'd be the best hotel I'd ever stayed at, and it would be the only place I'd ever stay. Ever. Period. No really...period. I mean it.

Soooo...I first encountered the GF on TV in 1988...and I finally got to stay there in 2009. It only took 21 years. :sad2:
This trip involved the same 4 traveling on this trip. It was to be for 4 nights, and I convinced Tom, Erin and Seth to pony up the cash for a standard GV room. I admit that I almost drove myself crazy that summer worrying, because I knew the GF was expensive, and I didn't want my co-travelers to feel as though they'd wasted their money. I also discovered The Dis that summer and read about some construction going on that summer at the GF, involving cherry-pickers and a new floor going down in the main lobby, and I had visions of the GF in shambles....as in a pile of grand, pixie-dusted rubble, and I wasn't pleased. I considered a move to the Poly or the CR...and the CR move *almost* happened, but friends and family reminded me that I'd always wanted to stay at the GF, and to have a little faith in Disney....and so I did....and boy...did the GF deliver.
We arrived and got off the bus, and were asked for our names. When I said my last name, "Frank" was summoned and was told to bring us in. I assumed this was a little luxury for GF guests, and thought nothing of it.
Until he walked us past the front desk.
Then I knew.
It was happening.
Remember I was pretty new to the Dis, but I knew a little bit about this magical place called Club Level. It was somewhere up in the sky, in the land of "We'll never afford this," just around the riverbend from "Keep dreaming."
And I figured out it was happening to us.
We were becoming the stuff that countless Dis threads tried to figure out the algorithm for.
I started to slap Tom on the arm and say, "It's happening! It's happening!"
Frank turned around and said, "This is Disney's year of a million dreams, and I'm delighted to tell you that you'll be staying in the Main Building (it gets capital letters) with us, in our Royal Palm Club."
Wheeeeeeee!
We were whisked up to our glorious room with this glorious view.....
DisneyAugust2009023.jpg

If you're wondering where our room was...I drew you a helpful diagram. It's very scientific. Enjoy.
ourroom.jpg

Everyone was delighted....including Tom. He took this picture...but believe me. He was delighted.
DisneyAugust2009029.jpg

Soooo anyway. The GF blew us away. We loved that room, and I renewed my vows with The Grand saying I'd never stay anywhere else.

Here's the problem. The GF ain't cheap. And it's not everyone's taste either. I broke my vows and stayed at BLT with 14 of my closest friends the following summer, but missed my beloved GF. I felt like I was cheating....with a sleazy second-rate mistress. I vowed...next trip. GF-city. Period. I mean it.

So, I don't know how it came about, but for our next trip, we brought Tom's co-worker Joe, and we decided not to do the GF, but to do the Epcot loop. I'm assuming that the reasoning was that Joe would not have cared for the Victorian splendor of the GF (humph!). Having looked at pics of the Epcot resorts on AllEars.net, we decided that the BWI might be to our liking. And we found that on the Epcot loop, with the right, discount, we *could* afford CL again...so darn you GF and your magical upgrades, you spoiled us forever! (PS...love you!)

So, we got to BWI...and my thought was, "Hmm...this will do." And then I saw the room...and the lounge....and this view....
IMG_0105.jpg

And much like that dreadful little Orphan Annie, I thought, "I think I'm gonna like it here!"

And an Epcot loop fan was born.
Fast forward to 2hrs. later, and we've soaked up our view...and the food in the lounge...and are in the scary clown pool, surrounded by loveliness, and I looked at Tom and he said "Say it.." and I did. "I really really....REALLY like it here." And I meant it...and it's held.
By the end of the week...I'd broken up with the GF, and given myself heart and soul to the BWI. But the split with GF was amicable, and we're still friends. But of course, resort-wise, I always have a wandering eye...and my eye was wandering...across Crescent Lake. I wanted to come back to BWI as soon as possible, but maybe add a night or two here and there at YC or BC, specifically BC.
So, the following year, we booked at BWI again...and loved it again, but we added on a couple of bonus nights at BC. We booked a CL-Water view room.
You're not going to believe this.
The Pixie Dust kicked in again.
Hello VP Suite.
Are you kidding me?
Disney..you're going to spoil me.

Gah! Nothing could top this!
And truly...since then...nothing has.
That was August 2012, and since then, we've stayed at YC twice. No big upgrades, but we really really like it there. I teach 9 year olds all day long, and I love kids, but to find a resort on the Epcot loop that seems to have less than it's fair share of children, is nice. Pleas no haters! Again... I love kids! But I also love peace and quiet on my vacation, and YC just seems more couple-friendly. We also like the dining there very much..and the bar.

So, which resort is my favorite of all?
Who's the fairest of them all?
That's tough...and among the top 3, it changes daily.
Right now, my ranking looks like this.

1. BWI
2. YC
3. BC
4. GF
5. Swan
6. WL
7. Dolphin
8. POR
9. AKL
10. BLT
11. CSR

I reserve the right to alter this list whenever I want to. It's my PTR. So there.

Following along. DH and I are going in August too for the first time. We've been in September and June so we know how hot it will get but I think it will still be a shock to our systems (we're from Canada). I'm so sorry about your poor Henry! :sad2: All we have are our fur-babies and I know how difficult it must be to lose one of them.

Subbing in too. Sounds like a wonderful trip. We'll be at the GF for the first time in June. Looking forward to reading along. Your GF room and view looked amazing :thumbsup2

Holy pixie dust Batman! Those are some amazing upgrades! :goodvibes :cloud9:

I have always wanted to stay at BW but have been interested in BC and YC as well cause Stormalong Bay just looks incredible. You have not helped me narrow it down as to which one to try first! lol :p;)

Hoping you get some more pixie dust this trip!

Coming out of lurkdom to sub as well. :cool1:

You had me at a GF fan since 1989. I was in college then and did a project on the still-under-construction resort. It took a LOOOONG time for us to be able to afford a night there, finally getting to stay for our 20th anniversary.

Since then, we have also moved on to a long term relationship with the BC. We even have a favorite room there. We do occasionally dally with it other resorts, including the GF, but always look for availability at the BC first.

You HAVE scored some major upgrades! :cheer2:

I'm looking forward to reading the rest of your report!

Great job! Love seeing sweet Henry and your fabulous past resort experiences. I do have a burning Disney planning question - with 3 resorts, which Magic Band colors are you going to choose? You'll get such a nice variety!

Subbing! :scared: Ok, so I feel like I'm a thread-killer, because whenever I subscribe to a PTR or TR, the OP always seems to just stop posting! Please don't destroy my self-esteem! :rotfl:

All kidding aside - looking forward to reading more!!! :goodvibes

We were just in Canada! We live about 5.5hrs by car from Montreal, and have the best time up there!

The GF is amazing. Enjoy your trip, it's coming up!

It's truly a tough choice between the 3 Epcot resorts! My favorite absolutely changes daily! If you want to share exactly what you're hoping to get out of your resort, I'd be glad to help you narrow it down!

No no no! You're not a thread killer! I'm a teacher and entering the busiest weeks of the year! Lots of crowd control, mixed with a bunch of assessments and a ton of paperwork! I promise that after 6/25 I'll be all over this thread!
