How bad are the drops on...

Hi there. On our past trips I've been too scared to try Indiana Jones and Space Mountain. I am deathly afraid of that butterflies in your tummy feeling you get on drops. I've watched countless YouTube videos but they did not help. I'd like to know how bad the drops on these two rides were compared to, say, the small drop on Splash Mountain that happens in the dark. This scares me more than the final big drop. I feel really silly asking this question, but I'd like to know what to expect. Thank you!

I don't even remember there being a drop on Indy? If there was it was so minor I didn't even notice it.

Space Mountain on the other hand... I went on it once and that was enough! It takes you up to the top and then you basically just drop for about 3 minutes. My wife loved it, but my kid cried the whole way down! I can live never going on it again...

Ok maybe ONCE during MHP!!! Haha!!

When i think of indy and space i dont think drops.. Indy is way more jerky and yes you
do jerk downhill but i dont get that butterflies in your tummy feeling. Space is a coaster so ya you do hit some bunny hops, but no big drops in my opinion, just constant fun. If you are scared it will ruin your day id say try it at the end of the night cause everyone should do them at least once!

There is only one noticeable drop in Indy from what I remember, and it's right at the end (boulder). Pretty minor in my opinion, and if you can do PotC, you should be good.
Same goes for Space. With all the turning I hardly even notice the drops. Space at WDW is a lot more intense drop wise.

I agree with this. I get butterflies in my stomach at the drops in WDW (space and expedition), but never in DL. The only time I get butterflies drops is on ToT, because that's only drops, haha.

If you can do Splash Mountain and POTC, then you can definitely do IJ and SM. Just do it!! You may find your new favorite ride!! :woohoo:

HAVE FUN!!! :cool1:

There's no one big movement on Indy, but there are a lot of small changes in direction. It's not meant to be a smooth ride. It's not a roller coaster like ride at all.

I agree with the PPs in that there aren't really any drops per se in Indy. Indy's more like a very rough car ride. The road has curves, inclines, and bumps. The inclines aren't really the "seat dropping" kind; it's more like when you ride a bicycle down a hill relatively fast. You're whole body tilts downward with the vehicle.

Space is much more like a traditional roller coaster...the drops aren't massive, but they do come up unexpectedly because it's dark inside. If you avoid Matterhorn and/or Big Thunder, I would probably also avoid Space.

Indy is extremely jerky. More so if you sit in the back, especially on the non-driver side. The thing about the part where you go under the boulder is that it's on a track, you never free fall. If you get the butterfly sensation, it's psychological.

Then sensation is caused when the G forces on your body change as you go over a hill. Since the coaster on Space never really goes up, only spirals down, I can't say I've ever felt it, but I also know all the bumps and turns of that ride pretty well after riding it 100+ times, so it's hard to say what newbie would feel.

One ride where I definitely still feel it is on Screamin's bunny hills. I don't get it on the big drops, but those little slopes always force me out of the seat a little.

I remember finding out what the top speed of SM was. It's about 35 MPH, but it seems faster because it's dark and they use a moving star-field. It's been a while since I've been on it, but I seem to recall there is no big single drop like you'd get after the first hill of a traditional roller coaster.

If anything, Indy feels like you're in a car constantly going over potholes.

I am like you -- can't stand the drops on rides because of the butterfly feeling in your flopping tummy. But I thought the drops on Splash Mountain were the worst. I don't really remember drops on Space Mountain -- the speedy curves in the dark were what got me on my first ride through! (Should be noted that it's now one of my favorite rides, while I am still debating whether I even want to ride Splash again because of the drops.) It kinda tricks you by taking you up a steep hill, and then you spend the whole ride dreading the drops, but there aren't really any, only small ones that you don't feel in your tummy.

Didn't ride indy, as our thrill seeking 6 year old was too short, so I can't comment on that one. I love Splash and Screamin' but really did not like Space Mountain. I loved the beginning, where it's like Peter Pan but faster. After that, though, it was way too jerky and I felt car sick when I got off. I also didn't like that I couldn't see or comfort my 3 year old riding next to me. He was crying "I'm gonna fall off!" So I tried to put my hand on his knee, but I felt I needed to grip onto that bar for dear life! I really don't think it should be a 40" height requirement, because it was far too much for my 41" 3 year old. DD6 LOVED it!

I am deathly afraid of that butterflies in your tummy feeling you get on drops.

In addition to the big drop on Splash there's another part where you feel this, so if it's really an issue you should avoid it (and Space Mtn, Calif Screamin, and Tower of Terror, obviously).

Indy doesn't really have this feeling. I think you'll be fine.

I love Indy...I can ride Space, but usually only once. For me, it's the spiral motion that gets me...I can ride ToT over and over again.

Thanks for all the information! I guess the drops are no big deal on SM. Either way, I will be dragged on the rides by my DD. If you see a grown woman crying on these rides in Sept. it will most likely be me. Thanks again. Now I have a better idea what to expect. :)

I used to be deathly afraid of the stomach drop feeling too! I know for a fact there is one very small drop that gives a stomach feeling in space mountain when the train makes a somewhat narrow 180 degree turn, and its the part in the soundtrack where there's only a drum roll (right before the laser shots). But honestly, I think the degree of the feeling differs for everyone. The drop was minor enough that I went on it again and again.
Indy doesn't have any stomach feeling, but I guess if i had to point out possible areas, it would be the area with the ghost above you/fire pit to your left, and the boulder dropping.

The part where you see that giant snake right in front of you might be one too right?

The drop in the dark on Splash Mountain, IMO, is worse than the "big drop" on Space Mountain.

The "big drop" is at 1:53 mark in the video

Indiana Jones does not have any drops, so you have nothing to be worried about there. The only part of that ride that could remotely be considered a drop is at the end when you encounter the rolling ball and then going under it.
And that part of the ride is taken at such a slow speed, you hardly notice you're going down hill.

As for the butterflys in your stomach feeling, well everyone is different. I rarely get that feeling anymore when I go on theme park rides (been on over 100 roller coasters). And when a ride gives me that sensation, personally, I like it! None of the rides at Disneyland or DCA give me that feeling.

Take Bonine (Motion Sickness Medicine - Over The Counter) at night before park days. You won't feel a thing.

I hate the drop at the end of Splash Mountain - I actually haven't ridden it in years just for that reason! But I love Space Mountain. The drop in DL's Space Mountain is much, much shorter than the WDW version.

I went to WDW a few years ago and had a friend with me who was petrified of that stomach dropping feeling, and I convinced her to go on Space Mountain at WDW with me, telling her the drop was super tiny (thinking of the DL version). Welp, that drop came, and once it was over, she spent the rest of the ride screaming at me, "YOU LIED TO ME! YOU LIED TO ME!" as we came back to the loading dock. The CM's were very confused. Oops. :rolleyes1
