I have a massive toothache, so crap day from about lunchtime on. Dentist fit me in today luckily and the x-rays showed some decay in one tooth hitting the nerve. I need a root canal. The fake tooth I have screwed into my mouth in front is fractured above the gum line and needs to be replaced. My insurance will not pay for an implant so I'm going to be stuck with a partial plate. Yay. I asked for something for the pain and he only told me to take a couple of Tylenol, which feels like throwing a piece of wet spaghetti at a battleship. Now I'm going to bed, where I probably won't sleep.

Sorry to hear. My dentist doesn't do pain meds either. I've had decent results using a Tylenol/Advil cocktail and making sure to take it every 4 hours like clockwork. The Advil makes a pretty big difference because it reduces inflammation, which is almost always an issue with dental pain. I hope you feel better soon.

So much better now that I quit my job! I cannot wait for my final day. My roommates say that I even smell better - I guess my mood affects my scent?

A little stressed out & Mentally exhausted - if I could only sleep more than 2-3 hours - I would be feeling so much better.

But, like everyone else, if I bump into someone and they should ask, "how are you?" - chances are the answer will be, "fine, thank you, how are you?".

Ive had 6-8 COVID tests over the past three weeks. All negative. I’ve had two positive rapid strep tests followed by 2 negative cultures. If after this round of antibiotics my throat continues to hurt or it comes back I’ll be asking for a referral to an ENT.

I’m ok I guess. Feeling a little down tonight but that’s not unusual since my mom passed. It tends to sneak up on my when it’s quiet and I’m alone.

I remember that. The episodes do get farther apart from each other, but sometimes it's just so random.

When DS needed to do that, he was told to alternate - Tylenol one time, Advil the next. It keeps up the pain control without overdosing on either specific med.

That must be awful. Have you tried Orajel? That can help numb it until you have it taken care of, but I’m not sure it will work. Worth a try, though. Ice can also help shrink swelling, where heat expands, but you could try both on your face near the tooth and see if either helps, too.

The Tylenol dosing can be confusing. This is from their website.

Regular Strength (325mg)
2 tablets every 4-6 hours while symptoms last
Not to exceed 10 tablets in 24 hours, unless directed by a doctor

Extra Strength (500mg)
2 caplets every 6 hours while symptoms last
Not to exceed 6 caplets in 24 hours, unless directed by a doctor

So the maximum dose with either is around 3,000mg/day


Check for maximum ibuprofen dosing with whatever you’re using.
You could ask your dentist to call in a prescription for ibuprofen which many think works better than OTC.

Yes. Max dose of each. It's 800mg of Advil; I forget what it is for the Tyelnol. I do hope you get some relief.

Thank you guys. I'm so tired that I laid in bed all afternoon. I'll try the Orajel; we don't have any in the house but I can get one of my cousins to go and buy me some tomorrow. I called the dentist's office about taking the Advil (which is ibuprofen) alternating with the Tylenol, but I had to leave a message because nobody picked up the phone. Now I'm going back to bed-toothaches are the worst. I have a very high tolerance for pain, but this is really bad. I can't even function.

If it doesn't get any better he's going to prescribe Tylenol 3 for bedtime only.

I am ok - I have a lot I could complain about but I always stop and think - someone out there is going through some God awful incident right now that I am not so shut up you are great !! Some days thus does not work but most days it does - I try to remember always I am blessed - so I’m ok and I hope you are too !!
I hope you can get you tooth addressed as they are horrible pain that nothing makes go away - I’ve had several root canals and two total abscess - Good Luck !!

I think I'm too tired to be angry, so thanks for filling in. I do have a family doctor, but he's not going to do anything like prescribe something for a toothache- he would just tell me to go to a dentist. I thought about going to another dentist in the neighborhood, but that's a big no-no with my insurance, especially since I have an open request for services with my current dentist.
