After reading one of the many heated bathroom threads. I started to wonder about my son and taking a shower while we are at FW. He is now 6 and while he doesn't mind me seeing him naked. I mind him seeing others naked or them feeling uncomfortable because he could see them naked. He would not be able to turn the water on and regulate it himself and he tends to get side tracked and I do not want to have to send some man in to get him out of the shower for me.

How are the showers set up? Will I just have to live with a stinky dirty 6 year old for 10 days?

I see someone else can't sleep tonight.:confused3

Anyway, there are 3-4 showers side by side. They are broken up by 3/4 walls for privacy. You have a small area for placing your belongings and getting undressed and then another area for the actual shower.

But the knobs and all are similar to other regular showers. He'd have to regulate the cold/hot himself.

So these showers are in a mens area and womens area. I was hoping for separate showers with doors so I could just go in and get him showered. If I send him into the mens shower area he is going to take a long time by himself and not come out clean. He will however entertain anyone else who is in there. I may end up with a stinky child for the 10 days.

Yes, the men's showers are in the men's bathroom. Most (if not all) of the bath houses have a laundry room in the middle and the ladies bathroom and showers on the other end.

In my experience, everyone's been pretty discreet at campground showers. When my guys were very young, I let them take showers in the women's bathroom and supervised since there's often two sections per shower -- the dressing area and shower area. If he's uncomfortable in a public bathroom, maybe he could wear a bathing suit?

My guys sometimes took "showers" -- again, with their swimsuits on -- with the outdoor shower on the camper. I wouldn't say they were completely squeaky-clean, but at least it took off one or two layers of dirt! :rotfl:

I do not know how you are camping tent or camper.I have saw it posted on these boards to use a big plastic container as a tub you could use it as storage on the trip down and for a childs bath while your there.:surfweb:

This may work. He said he wanted to fish while he was there. Would this count as his fishing experience?

The issue would not be him being uncomfortable because he doesn't care if I am there seeing him naked, or most likely anyone else seeing him. I do not want to make others uncomfortable especially other young girls who do not want a boy seeing them. I would not like it if I embarrassed someone, not expecting a boy his age, was undressed or half dressed.

It sounds like this wouldn't be an issue as there is a private dressing area for each shower. I will just look in the bathroom first to make sure it is clear and then head him straight to a stall. It is not like he will need to shower each day. He is a boy and will be quite happy with not having to shower each day.

That's exactly how my DW handled showers with my DS, but this was maybe only every 3rd day or so. The rest of the time was a quick bathing suit shower with the outside shower on our pop-up.

Have fun on your trip.

Here is a fairly good photo of a shower stall
comfort2.jpg

As was mentioned there are 4 stalls altogether on each side (mens and womens). 3 like this and a 4th which is much larger for handicapped guests. It has a roll in shower with a fold down seat and shower head on a hose.

As you see there is a small area with a bench and wall hooks for clothes. There is a door with an inside latch. The shower itself has a curtain. I have never seen anyone naked in all our many visits to the Fort and nobody has seen me. :rolleyes1 As long as you dress and undress inside your shower stall this should be the case with your son as well.

The shower head is operated by a single lever type faucet. Rotate all the way counter clockwise for full hot, to the middle for warm and clockwise for cold and then off.

Depending on when you want to shower, you might have the whole place to yourself. However if you choose mornings when everyone is getting ready to hit the parks, you may find you have to wait.

One of the advantages of having a golf cart is being able to go to different comfort stations. OOPS thats one of our secrets! Sometimes ours is busy while one on the other side of the campground is empty.

I have seen boys your sons age in the womens showers. It has never been a problem because of the private shower areas. Also, the handicap shower is much larger and it wouldn't be a problem you being in there with him. Even the other showers have the dressing area so that you could stay in there if you wanted to. My son was young when we took him and I took him into the womens showers. No one ever complained. Hope this helps.:earsboy::earsboy::earsboy:

Thanks everyone. I have not camped for any length of time with him. Usually we shower before we go for the weekend and then shower when we get home. After looking at the photo I see no issue with him being in there with me.

The only problem I've had with boys in the ladies room is if they try to peek in between the crack in the door and the stall wall. One boy went so far as to get down on the floor and look under the door. His mother was there and said nothing. As long as your son observes the rules of common courtesy, all should be well.

I pickup up a privacy tent a Cabela's. You MIGHT be able to pair it with a sun shower and some biodegradeable camping soap for another option. I don't know if the FW rules would allow this. It's similar to this one:

Have fun!

Just turn the hose on him...all sites are equipped with hoses!!! If he jumps in the pool everyday...he'll be clean enough...ya know...for a 6 year old boy, anyway(cleanliness is NOT their first priority)!!!

That dawned on me after I posted, but I was too lazy to go edit. As a mom of two boys, I understand what you're saying! Kudos to you for being sensitive about others' needs.

Although I do like Frank's suggestion...:rotfl:

After a little thought about this here's what I would do if I were tent camping without the wife and with my daughters. I would put a big towel over their heads and lead them into the men's showers the way Michael Jackson used to do with "Blanket". Once in there I would sit on the bench outside of the stall. If one man so much as even looked at one of them in an inappropriate way I would reign down fists upon his skull.

Other than a time or two for a good hair wash. This will most likely be the plan.

He is not a big fan of clean. I will now need the solution for how I get a shower and keep him from gathering the native wildlife and other children, to take over the campground, while I shower.:lmao:
