I mentioned it in the reopening thread, I was there Thurs-Saturday this week. It felt busy due to the lack of shows, characters, parades, as people are walking around more. But lines for headliners were about 40-50 minutes long, for midday in Summer, that's not a bad score. We skipped Big Thunder Mountain this visit as it was out of order on both Friday & Saturday during EMH, but we are AP holders, we will be back.
The only issue is, it is hard for DLP to predict wait times. I am not 100% sure if I got lucky, as on Thursday queues were always shorter than predicted wait time. I think Disney still counts on people socially distancing, but in reality they don't always, that makes it hard to make a good prediction.
We saw the sign for VIP tours outside the gates, and we saw a VIP tour group at the only show they have, which I absolutely recommend. The new Disney Junior show at the studios is a lot of fun
If this is a once-in-a-lifetime visit and you only have one day, you can always benefit from a VIP Tour. Is it very necessary.... I don't think so. If you stay multiple days on site, have a good plan for EMH / touring, you can get everything done.
If you like characters and indeed shows, it will help, as lines for the Marvel characters, the Mickey & the Magician characters, Anna/Elsa/Kristof/Sven (all in the studios) can get long, + the Stars on Parade character at Nautilus, a VIP tour guide will definitely help. I had trouble getting a Standby pass for Crush Coaster, but maybe that was just me and I didn't try hard enough (also not sure they used a standby pass these days, I did see the sign on Thursday), so there a VIP tour guide might help. Otherwise, at EMH Crush should be open without a pass.
I get why people who have only have one day would go for a VIP tour, but will you really enjoy the park as you are rushing from one ride to the next? To me a VIP tour feels like you don't get enough time to process what you are doing.
