Housing, Arrival Dates Question

How does picking housing work? I know it's pretty first-come, first-serve on your date, but do they have a certain amount of each type available on each arrival day, or could you be the first one in line on the third date and not be able to get anything you wanted because they are already filled up? I'm the first advantage date, but I know there are several spring dates before me...

Yeah, they have a certain number of each room type in all the complexes available for each arrival date. I was one of the last ones for this fall (I believe there were only 2 after me?) and I was able to get the complex and size I wanted.

Well... this is sort of true. The rooms available for any check-in date are the ones that became available after other CPs check out, a day or a few days earlier. There aren't always rooms of each type available for every check-in date, though there's usually a pretty decent variety.

My check-in date had only a handful of apartments at Chatham, none at Patterson, and TONS of Vista. About 45mins in, all that was left was Vista. Which was a blessing in disguise really, but still.

I have a question. Is it mandatory to live in Disney housing?

I have a friend nearby who offered to let me move in to his apartment. It would save me a lot of money if I could. Also, if it is allowed, would I be refunded my $200 housing fee?
