Housewarming gift ideas?

I have had a rough week from an emotional standpoint and am just about braindead. Trouble is, I am headed to Connecticut tomorrow to visit my sister who has a new home. While I am there, we will be taking a road trip to visit a dear friend from high school who also has a new home.

I would like to bring a housewarming gift for each of them. My sister is married with a 6 year old son, and my friend is single. I need something that I can take easily on the plane, and would prefer to stay away from gift certificates. Any ideas?

Home Depot gift cards. I give them everytime, along with a houseplant.

Candles and decorative holders are always appreciated, couple bottles of wine, or picture frames.

ETA: Just thought of a few more. Vases, and since the holidays are coming, ornaments, or anything Christmas or Thanksgiving related, like some decorative placemats or napkin rings, holiday cd's, or stocking holders.

WHen you get their could you stop at a nursery and buy a tree for each of them to plant in their yards?

Is it possible to order a plant or something like that and have delivered to them before you arrive and then bring a bottle of wine with you?

i just bought a friend, who moved into her home last week, outdoor decorations for the fall. I figured she had no time what's so ever so I picked up a scarecrow, outdoor candles, etc.


I also bought a beautiful photo album with a small house in the center. I printed up the words to 'Our House' for the first page and bought some stickers at a scrapbook store relating to house things. ie...our garden, first christmas, etc.
