Houses and apartment rates in your area

Atlanta housing is all over the spectrum... My sister bought a very nice townhome, foreclosure, for 88,000 last year, while up the block from her houses go for $350,000 up to 500,000.

My cousin bought her Mom a 60,000 in Dekalb county, another foreclosure, 3bd 3ba.

Houses in my son's school district go from 350,000 and up. It's why I rent! Rents here go from 800 to 1500 a month, but there are more and less in other areas of Atlanta.

A BIG change since the Olympics! I bought my first house here in 1996 for $85,000! :earseek:

New York, my hometown, makes Atlanta look FREE, but San Francisco makes NY look cheap! I'm waiting for someone from my niece's town to chime in. She lived in Manhattan till 8/31/2001, yes, two weeks before THAT day, in a studio for $1800 a month. She is now renting a flat in SF for 2200 a month! :earseek:

My parents rent (within the next 5 years hoping for their own home) ... We live in a 3 bedroom/1 bathroom/2 car garage/townhouse that is about 5 years old with the rent of $1250 and two years ago the rent was $900 ... so our place has always been a good deal, specially living in San Diego let alone California.

I live in Suffolk County, LI. We pay $1500 for a 2bedroom, 1 bath apartment. We are buying a small 3 bed, 1 1/2 bath 90yo house for $325,000. Which is a bargain for this area.

 good grief. How do some of ya'll afford to pay that much money for a house/apartment?

I live just outside of Richmond. I have a 5 bedroom house, 2 bathrooms, large yard and it's all brick. $695 a month. I don't think I am ever moving again after reading this thread.

Vermont....prices fluctuate wildly. Near Burlington - our largest city and major "hub," a 3 bed 2 bath 2000 sq newer house goes for $300,000 plus. The same house an hour away is probably $200,000.

We bought our house in 1998 for $74,000 and sold it last year for $147,000 (put in about $10,000 in improvements). This was about 1 hour from Burlington.

We just bought a 3 bed 3 bath with 3.4 acres for $242,000. This house sold in 1999 for $129,000 and we are now 10 minutes from Burlington.

Rents...our 2 bed 2 bath townhouse, brand new, 1200 sq ft. with garage & full basement, rented for $1200 per month.

How do we afford our house? We put down a HUGE downpayment and got a 2.99% interest rate. Otherwise we would still be renting that condo~!

mommytotwo, what part of the big island, Hilo or Kona? Hilo has some of the most reasonably priced real estate in Hawaii - I've seen fixeruppers for under $200k. And last time I looked in Las Vegas (my in-laws go to open houses wherever they travel), their housing prices were more expensive than Hilo and going up fast!

On the other hand, if you were to move to east Honolulu, townhomes are going for $500k, with homes starting at $600k. In my neighborhood, the house a few doors down is on the market for 2.5 million and another one is on the market is for 2.9 million - but I live on the beach so you pay for that.

Chicago checking in here -- as with many other states, prices can vary WIDELY - but the average price of a home 4 bedroom/2 bath in our neighborhood now is $275,000. We're still inside the Chicago city limits but very near the outside -- about 15 mins. downtown by car. OTOH, our very first place was a 750 sq. foot loft near downtown Chicago which we bought for $69,000, sold for $85,000 a year later in 1995, and has just recently sold for $196,000.
