House training puppy

All advice needed.
We pick up our new addition Thomas (who will be 8 weeks old )2 weeks on Friday. We are busy getting house & garden beagle proof.
I have seen puppy training mats, has anyone used them? or what is the besy way to train help (luckily no carpets downstairs)

the best way to train is by putting the pup outside as often as possible and certainly after every meal/drink

i used to put newspaper by the door and then reduced the amount i put down !

good luck....i found it easier to train the kids than the dog

What I've always done is cover the area where the puppy's going to sleep with newspaper overnight so he/she goes on the paper. Once they're used to going on the paper, I slowly reduce the amount of newspaper I put down until only one piece is on the floor.

During the daytime, it's all about constant vigilance! I take the puppy outside to 'perform' after waking, after eating, after playing, if I see him/her sniffing around and if I just think it's time! I use the phrase "Be a good girl/boy" as the wee command and reward when successful. It seems to reinforce it a little more and, as they gain control of their bladder, I can get them to hurry up when I'm going out...

I have also used the crate method but I think the above way is the easiest...

All this puppy talk has started me thinking how much I'd love a pug!!! Off to peruse puppy ads...

i think what's been said so far is good. we do the same stuff with our puppy really.

when we first got ours, we used to have him sleep in the bedroom for a couple of nights, just so he could get used to his new home. after a while, we set up a stair gate in the kitchen, put the puppy basket there, and even though he yaps a lot, he knows no one will come and he'll get used to it eventually.

we did the same with food, he's not allowed any of our meals...we set his food up in a dog bowl, and if he knocks it over (which he still does) he's learnt that it's not going to get filled up again.

that's his meal, and now he tipped it, no more.

last tip:. try playing with him a lot, puppies are really playful!. use his name, and set out puppy toys on the floor, and he'll soon be 1 happy pup!

We used to just put newspaper down. When we got our 2nd dog he started to tear the newspaper up as if he was insulted we put it down we knew then he was house trained. It did help that he basically copied & learnt from our other dog so it didn't take too long.p

As others have said it is all about routine, out the dog out after meals etc. Once he is able to go for walks that will certainly help too.

In regards to posting photos I find it easiest to upload them to a site like Photobucket & then copy the URL & paste it on here.

My advice is don't bother wasting money buying those training pads.....my dog (he's 3 now) when he was a puppy just tore them to shreds. I found taking him in the garden after meals etc as mentioned already worked for us.

Of course their will be the odd little accident but if I managed to catch him in the act then I used to make a loud noise (don't scream or say their name) and it usually distracts them enough to make them stop then quickly pick him up and put him in the garden to finish his business.

Can't wait to see piccies.....I really want to get another pup but don't think it would be practical at this moment in time.

Have to second this - worked in no time.

Also I was taught by a dog trainer that you should always have your meal first before the dog so they know their position in the family. Also when they are young - while they are eating occassionally move their bowl - this should do away with possession issues. You hear of some dogs who growl as soon as you go near their bowl/toy etc. Again this is just re-inforcing top dog etc.

Hi,

I have always used a clicker -very small devise that you press when the pup has done something positive. Not just for house training, but all things.

When accidents do happen, remember to use a proper pet cleaner that will get rid of smells (we can't detect), everyday house cleaners don't do the job.

I also totally agree with making sure your dog gets fed after you. I go as far with my dogs as putting th food down, and telling them to leave it, until I give the command to 'take it'.

You have to remember that pups tend to wee, when they are excited, after feeding and when they wake up. If you take your pup out as soon as they wake, play or after food you can pre-empt a lot of accidents. Also when your pup is 'going ' outside remember to give a command. I use go toilet, and it will become familar with the command.
